As we're entering into spring, here are a few spring time plumbing tips.

1. Check your water heater for corrosion. Water and oxygen can work together to cause rust that can corrode metal. Inspect the exterior visible surface for rust or inconsistencies in the metal and pay attention to the bottom of the tank.

2. Keep an eye out for outdoor leaks. Prevent flooded landscaping and indoor water damage by watching out for leaking outdoor plumbing fixtures.

3. Open and close valves. Overtime, valves can develop problems opening and closing due to mineral buildup. It's important to periodically open and close the valves in your home to lessen the chance of this buildup.

4. Check for indoor leaks. Washing machine hoses, toilet tanks, bathroom and/or kitchen faucets. These can develop leaks and drive up your water bill.

Triple Crown Plumbing now offers backflow device install and testing. What is a backflow device? It is a device installed onto a pipe that only allows water to flow in one direction. It acts as a one way gate that allows water to flow into your home from the city's public water supply but stops water if it tries to flow backwards into the main water supply. In simpler terms it works to protect potable water from contamination and pollution.

Now that the temps have dropped below freezing we advise that you leave both your hot and cold water at a steady trickle. That includes faucets, showers, bathtubs, etc.. DO NOT DRIP OUTDOOR FAUCETS, KEEP THOSE COVERED. In the event you lose power and choose to find somewhere else to stay, we advise that you turn the water off at the main shut off valve. If you’re unable to turn your water off at the main you need to leave all faucets at a steady trickle of water on the hot and cold sides.

If you suspect your pipes have frozen, you need to turn the water off at the main and leave your water off until temps come above freezing. (32 degrees is freezing). Once pipes are frozen there is no way to thaw them. Again you’ll have to wait for the temp to rise above freezing and your pipes will naturally begin to thaw.

As we all probably know by now, freezing temps are coming. We have compiled a list of a few things that are beneficial to get us through the weather.
1. Drip all faucets (hot and cold) this keeps water moving through the pipes. The drip needs to be more than just a slow drip but not a wide open flow.
KEEP FAUCETS DRIPPING WHILE THE TEMPS ARE BELOW FREEZING (day and night)
2. If you suspect your pipes are frozen, turn the water off to your home or call the city to have them turn the water off. Once pipes are frozen there is nothing that can be done until the temps outside come above freezing.
3. Remove hoses from hose bib. Insulate your hose bib with either a hose bib cover (can be found at Home Depot or Lowes) or you can wrap them with towels.
