Dallas DIYers: Are You Sabotaging Your Own AC with Bad Thermostat Habits?
Texas summer is no joke. Triple-digit afternoons are common, and how you use your thermostat has a direct, measurable impact on how much money you send to your energy provider every month.
A few smart adjustments don’t cost a dime and produce instant savings without sacrificing comfort.
1. Optimize Your Setpoint: The Magic 78°F
For North Texas homes, 78°F is the sweet spot. It sounds high, but your AC has a huge job pulling 105°F outside heat down to that level.
The Reality: The Department of Energy research shows that for every degree you set below 78°F, your energy consumption increases by a staggering 6% to 8%.
The Fix: Set it to 78°F when you are home. Use ceiling fans (running counter-clockwise) to feel several degrees cooler at a more efficient temperature.
2. Stop Forcing extreme temperature changes
It is a common mistake: You arrive home from work, and the house is hot, so you crank the thermostat down to 65°F to "cool the house faster." Do not do this.
The Myth: Thermostats are not accelerators. A lower setting won't cool your home any faster. The system outputs cold air at one speed.
The Danger: When it is 100°F outside in North Texas, asking for a 35-degree difference is brutal. Your system was designed for a ~20-degree differential. An extreme setting forces it to run continuously without ever reaching the setpoint, wasting massive amounts of electricity and struggling to dehumidify the air because it never completes a proper cycle.
3. Master the Fan Setting: AUTO vs. ON
This is the fastest five-second change you can make. If your thermostat says "Fan: ON," you are raising your indoor humidity level.
Use "AUTO": This is the correct daily setting. The fan runs only during active cooling cycles. This delay gives the evaporator coil inside time to drain all the condensation it pulled out of the air. This drainage is the dehumidification process.
Avoid "ON": When set to "ON" or "Circulate," the fan runs constantly, even when the compressor shuts off. The constant air blasts then re-evaporate that collected moisture right back into your air, canceling out the AC’s dehumidification efforts.
4. The Smart Thermostat Advantage
If you are a serious DIYer looking for an upgrade, a smart or programmable thermostat is one of the highest ROI investments you can make for your home.
Automation Pays: It can automatically raise the temperature 7°F to 10°F for at least 8 hours a day when the house is empty, returning it to comfort levels before you walk in the door. This produces significant annual savings.
Early Warning System: Smart thermostats track your system's runtime. If you notice your AC is suddenly running 20% longer than usual to achieve the same indoor temperature, it’s a red flag. You can catch airflow, filter, or refrigerant leaks before they lead to a total system failure on a scorching Saturday afternoon (We're open on Sunday btw) .
