Safety is not something we talk about; it is what we are about. Safety day is not about checking boxes or filling out training rosters; it is about taking a critical look at our own practices and looking our failures in the eye. The day is rooted in teaching moments inspired by our own experiences and recent incidents and accidents, led by the people in the field doing the work everyday.
To be safe and to ensure the health and well being of our team, we need to be willing to examine where we have failed ourselves and each other and figure out how we can be better. The day was filled with candid and frank discussion and input from nearly every employee.
Mackinzie said it best when he told us “your best protective equipment is your mind.” Simple and profound words.
