Thinking about installing a fireplace but not sure which direction to go? Here’s a quick breakdown ⬇️

Gas Fire Feature (Natural Gas or Propane)
Pros:
• Instant on/off convenience
• Very low maintenance
• Often allowed during Colorado fire bans

Cons:
• Less radiant heat
• Higher install cost
• Less of that classic “campfire” feel

Wood Burning Fire Feature
Pros:
• Stronger heat (great for cold Colorado nights)
• Real campfire experience
• Lower upfront install cost

Cons:
• More maintenance and cleanup
• Fire restrictions during high danger periods
• Takes more effort to start and maintain

Quick takeaway:
Gas = convenience & reliability
Wood = heat & classic campfire experience

Which would you choose for your backyard?

Before you hire any contractor in the mountains, ask these three questions.

Mountain projects are different. What works in the Denver suburbs doesn’t always survive up here. Altitude, soil movement, wildfire risk, access — it all changes how things should be built.

Here’s what most homeowners don’t think to ask:

1. Do they truly understand freeze/thaw cycles?
It’s not just about whether it looks good when it’s finished.

Will the stone heave?
Will the patio shift after a couple of seasons?
Is the base built deep enough for mountain conditions?
Will it still look solid after ten winters?

Up here, water gets underneath everything. If it’s not built right from the ground up, it won’t last.

2. Are they designing with fire mitigation in mind?
This is the foothills. It has to be part of the conversation.

Defensible space.
Smart plant selection.
Ember zones around the home.
Grading that moves water away from your foundation — not toward it.

A landscape can be beautiful and still be responsible. The best ones are both.

3. Have they thought through access and staging?
Mountain properties aren’t flat-lot suburb installs.

Where will materials go?
How will they protect your driveway?
How are they navigating tight access or steep grades?
What’s the cleanup plan?

Logistics matter more than people realize — especially on sloped sites.

Experience matters up here.

If you’re planning an outdoor project in Evergreen, asking these three questions will protect your investment for the long haul.
