Red. White. Blue. And a little natural wood.

Three spaces, three completely different palettes—all brought together by the warmth of a custom Grothouse surface.

Butcher block creates more than a surface—it creates a place to prep, gather, and live.

Here, a custom checkerboard butcher block becomes the working heart of this kitchen designed by Scott Stultz, bringing warmth and function to the center of the space.

There’s something to be said about watching the grain come to life…

Finish the sentence: Wood is ______.

One of our favorite end grain patterns: the Random Mix.

The variation in tone and grain brings a natural warmth and visual rhythm to a space—beautifully imperfect, yet intentionally crafted.

But end grain is about more than appearance. The exposed wood fibers naturally separate beneath the knife and close back together, helping the surface withstand years of chopping while preserving its character.

It’s why Grothouse butcher blocks are engineered to be used, not simply admired.

Beautiful. Functional. Made for years of everyday use—with surprisingly simple maintenance.

Another month has come and gone, but the inspiration remains.

August brought new ideas to the table, remarkable pieces through the shop, and another month of turning design into something tangible.

As we close out August and move into September, we’re reminded that great design is never standing still. It’s evolving. Being engineered. Taking shape.

And around here, there’s always something new in the works.

We can’t wait to show you what’s next at Grothouse.

Summer may be coming to a close, but by the sea, it seems to linger a little longer.

A kitchen made for coastal days and unhurried evenings surrounded by friends and family, beautifully designed by Marnie Homes and grounded by the warmth of natural wood.

A space that always feels like summer, no matter what the season.

Before there was certainty, there was a decision.

What began as side work was becoming something more—and Paul Grothouse had a choice to make: stay with what was familiar, or take a chance on what Grothouse could become.

He chose the risk.

Looking back, even he couldn’t have known just how far that decision would take him.

Listen in while Paul Grothouse, Founder and President of Grothouse discusses a beautiful flat grain, walnut, all heartwood top in the shop. This is an “old school” style design that a designer specified for a project. This is a reminder of the many possibilities available at Grothouse.

This too, is seen in our newest sheen Durata® Zero which allows for a more matte like appearance. Our Durata® line is completely waterproof and here with this flat grain top it is excelling.

Flat grain, explained. ↓

You’ve seen it. Now we’re breaking it down. Here’s exactly what makes flat grain construction different—and why it remains one of the most recognizable ways to showcase the natural character of wood. 🪵
