This is a project we did 3 years ago and it’s so exciting to see the growth on these fruit trees. You can really see the advantages of a densely planted food forest. Each of the trees is shading each other and keeping the sun from cooking the ground. Even after just 3 years our client is enjoying bucket loads of fruit.

We also installed a rainwater harvesting system with two cisterns and they are holding up beautifully. Our client is watering his plants and trees regularly with rainwater.

Here’s an update on the revolution garden. We got the water channels cut out and we are widening the channels by hand and forming the beds. Next will be seeding. This has been so much fun.

Update from Galaxy Gardens HQ. We are planting a 5,000 sq ft revolution garden today with three sisters approach using extremely drought tolerant species of cowpeas, sorghum, and sunflowers. These are all high calorie, high nutrition food crops that could feed our family in a time of need, but the priority is growing an annual supply of chicken feed right here on the land these birds live. That’s the smallest supply chain that exists, and the next decade will be a restructuring of our global supply chain.

We are also planting out about 30 moringa tree starts into our fruit tree lines. Moringas are a super food that can become a small tree from seed in a year. They love the heat and can give you and your family all the essential nutrients to be healthy. It’s definitely a tree for the revolution. More updates to come on the garden.

Here’s a project we did a couple months back that has gutters, a tank and a pump system that is connected to the irrigation. Our client’s raised beds get the best water possible long after the rains stop. We also installed a larger shade structure for her gardening area using metal posts and professional quality shade cloth. Having instant shade in your yard is a game changer to say the least.

We are facing massive water shortages throughout the western United States. Rainwater harvesting, green storm water management, and urban permaculture are all solutions to this growing problem. We are seeing a real uptick in the interest of homeowners to implement these solutions at a home level. We are seeing municipalities all around Phoenix putting a major emphasis on smart water usage. The Galaxy Gardens team is very excited by this trend. Let’s keep it going!!!

Here’s the final reveal of our project at the United Methodist Church in Gilbert. We filled out much of the parking lot with shade trees and plants, as well as new irrigation lines. We connected a 4,000 sq ft roof catchment over the chapel with a seamless gutter and it’s draining into our basin system. That catchment will yield 2,500 gallons of water per inch of rain. The basin’s are rocked to prevent erosion and facilitate water flow.

The basin areas were predominantly grass before so the grass was dug out and sprinklers moved in for the smaller dimensions. The basin areas are now mulched on the high ground and planted out with our favorite native pollinator plants and trees. The butterflies have already shown up. We went with the Desert Willow and the Desert Fern for the tree species that will add shade to the 1/4” minus pathway that are lined with a new paver border and pathway lights.

We got a lot of compliments from the congregation over the past couple weeks. It is super gratifying to be doing projects that get to be enjoyed by thousands of people in the years to come. We are grateful to partner with the church leadership on not only lowering their water bill, but having this rain garden be an inspiration to others on what is possible.

We are getting close to the finish line here at our project for the United Methodist Church in Gilbert. We have the basins almost rocked and the plants are going in. Even before we get the plants in the ground, the butterflies are already swarming in.

Desert Milkweed, or rush milkweed, is one of the best pollinator plants in the Sonoran desert. It brings monarch butterflies to the yard, and is also pollinated by the stunning tarantula hawk. We try and plant these in as many of our projects as possible.

Here’s a project update on the United Methodist Church of Gilbert. We love doing projects in public spaces because more people can enjoy these systems and learn from them. Passive rainwater systems combined with native plants is the way to go folks.

1/4” minus pathways lined with 3”-8” rip rap rock are a great way to do pathways through mulch beds.
