"It's almost like we took an indoor kitchen… and put it outside."

Vince on the outdoor kitchen in this Chandler backyard. The goal: it has to look like it belongs in the yard, with enough room that nobody's crowded when the family has people over.

Travertine everywhere, or travertine and pavers?

Most backyards end up with more than one surface underfoot. A few decisions are worth making early, before anyone picks a color:

• One material or two. Using travertine everywhere is simpler. Adding pavers lets the patio read as its own space.
• How much turf. Decide where you want open ground and where you need a hard surface for furniture and walking.
• Straight or stepped edges. Letting turf follow a deck's shape ties the two together. A straight edge makes a cleaner break.
• The perimeter. A planter wall, a border or planting along the boundary keeps the lawn from ending at a bare wall.

In this Chandler backyard we designed, travertine surrounds the pool, a paver patio sits beside the covered porch, and turf fills the open ground between, including the shaded corner in this photo.

Pool, lawn and putting green, all in one backyard.

We designed this Queen Creek backyard around a pool, lawn and putting green. The order of decisions is what made it all fit:

1. Plan the routes first, before a single paver is picked.
2. Give each activity its own space. The pool gets its own deck, and the lawn stays open.
3. Put the putting green where nothing else fits. Here, a side strip along an existing curved wall.
4. Repeat a few materials so separate spaces read as one yard.

Where should a backyard putting green go?

Usually not in the middle of the lawn. A green works best in a space that's too narrow or awkward for anything else but still easy to reach: a side yard, a corner, or the strip between a pool deck and a wall.

In this Queen Creek backyard we designed, the green sits in an elevated strip between an existing curved wall and the perimeter wall. A few things make it work:

• It's on the way to somewhere. The route from the pool deck to the fire pit runs right past it.
• It has clear edges. The two walls contain it, so it reads as its own space.
• It's lit. Path lights line its edge for evening use.
• It stays out of the way. You can see it from the deck, but it never sits between the house and the water.

That leaves the lawn open for play and the deck open around the pool and spa, which were built through our pool partner.

When a yard gets this big, the challenge isn’t adding more features — it’s making everything feel like it belongs together.

On this project, we’re carrying the same stacked stone through the cooking area, fire pit, fireplace and other key spaces so each part of the yard feels connected instead of pieced together.

About 90% there in this clip — and somehow this footage is already almost two weeks old. 👀

Since then, the sport court’s been painted, a ton of details have been finished, and we’ve been working through the last stretch of cleanup, punch-list items, and getting the whole property dialed in.

This one has been a big build, and the final reveal is going to be worth the wait.

Not the flashiest part of the job, but definitely one of the satisfying ones.
