A tornado touched down near Snowflake in Navajo County today, turning an ordinary afternoon storm into a rare severe weather event for northeastern Arizona. Even a short-lived tornado can create dangerous conditions with little warning.

The touchdown is a reminder that tornadoes aren't limited to the nation's traditional Tornado Alley. Fast-changing summer storms can quickly become hazardous, making it important for residents to stay weather-aware whenever thunderstorms develop.
