#2) Jonathan Bristol/ Gideon Bristol
House-other exterior views. Window in gable ended attic was covered at some date in 20th century and would be returned in the restoration. Another inappropriate 20th century lean to at left foreground in first photo above would be removed . Recommendation would be to add a story and 1/2 ell within the back of house to not interfere with the original lines and the impact of these excellent saltbox lines . This ell could be used for a “new” kitchen and other living space made to complement the features of the original house.
A little history on Gideon Bristol, born in this house in 1754. In 1776 he enlisted in the Continental Army as a common soldier and gradually rose to an officer’s position due to his competence , bravery and apparent tactical abilities. He served through the War for Independence through 1783, and as an aide to George Washington. He was so respected by Washington and others that he was selected to collect the weapons of the English officers at the deciding battle of The Revolution at Yorktown, Virginia.
When Lord Cornwallis feigned illness, Major General Benjamin Lincoln , being second in command for the Continentals, accepted the sword of General John O’Hara , second in command to Lord Cornwallis.
Lincoln was then allowed to keep the sword .Lincoln ( no relation to Abraham Lincoln)was also present at the battle victories of Saratoga and Charleston.Lincoln was appointed as the first Secretary of War by The Confederation Congress in 1781 and seerved in that position until The Treaty of Paris, ending the Revoltion) in 1783. He was later a member of The Constituional Congress.
