Choosing the right diving contractor is crucial to ensure safe and compliant operations, and avoid liability issues. As the old saying goes, "cheap work isn't good, and good work isn't cheap." It's important to remember that safe work isn't necessarily cheap either. Going with the cheapest proposal may expose you to serious liability risks.
When selecting a contractor, it's essential to question their compliance with safe operations and insurance liability. Failure to do so can result in civil and even criminal litigation for gross negligence in the event of a serious injury or death.
Commercial diving operations are governed by OSHA regulations, and it's the contractor's responsibility to understand and comply with them. However, as a client, it's crucial to question their compliance. Ask about their job hazard analysis, dive mode selection, manpower, standby divers, safe practice manuals, emergency procedures, and equipment testing just to name a few. On a side note please understand SCUBA is not always replacement for surface supplied diving.
Ensure that the dive team is trained in the mode of diving being performed and has current CPR certifications. Also, check that the contractor has appropriate liability insurance that covers diving operations.
Don't play Russian roulette with liability. Choose a contractor that prioritizes safe operations and compliance. Remember, good work isn't necessarily cheap, but it's worth the investment to ensure safety, compliance, and protection from liability.
