What is needed to prune mature trees?

To further promote the professional practice of arboriculture, ISA partnered with Google Arts & Culture through the World Wide Wood project to educate the public about the benefits of trees and the work arborists do.

The World Wide Wood project is a digital exhibit that offers interactive elements, videos, 3D models, and more. This project encompasses over 100 partners in 36 countries, highlighting the complexity and importance of trees in our world.

One of the online exhibits created through the support of ISA’s Trees Are Good focuses on pruning techniques for mature trees. Landscape trees require a higher level of care than forest trees to maintain their structural integrity, which is why it is important to hire a certified arborist to help with maintenance.

Another huge and beautiful American holly - this one grows in Bear, Delaware and easily tops 50 feet in height. This modest "foundation planting" is just a youngster and not yet a century old, since the house itself was built in 1930. There's another holly behind the house, but it's only half the height of this one. (Jim)

"Stumpy" propagules are alive and well, according to the U.S. National Arboretum 🌸 Plant material from “Stumpy,” the hollow but resilient Yoshino cherry tree removed from Washington, D.C.’s Tidal Basin in 2024, has been successfully propagated by the U.S. National Arboretum. The new trees are healthy and flowering for the first time this spring. The “Stumpy” trees will be carefully maintained at the Arboretum until the National Park Service is ready to receive them for planting, as early as next spring.

While the “Stumpy” trees are not on public display, visitors are encouraged to use the USNA’s self-guided cherry tree tour, “Beyond the Tidal Basin,” to visit the 70+ cherry tree varieties planted throughout the grounds of the Arboretum — many of which are in bloom right now!
