Citrus trees are abundant at retail garden centers this time of the year. They are one of the most popular types of fruit to grow in Louisiana home gardens. However, our occasional — but exceptionally cold — arctic air blasts can make success with these tropical and subtropical trees a bit tricky.

Because citrus trees are sensitive to the cold, special care is needed when choosing cultivars to grow and when deciding whether to plant them in the ground or in containers.

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about the best times and strategies for planting citrus. Our advice? It’s all about location, location, location — and even within Louisiana, recommendations vary by region. To get started, take a look at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map and see where your garden sits.

As temperatures warm up across Louisiana, so does termite activity. You may soon begin to notice large swarms of winged insects in and around your home. These are termite alates, also known as swarming termites.

Louisiana’s warm, humid climate makes it an ideal environment for termites, especially the Formosan subterranean termite, one of the most destructive species in the United States. Termites can silently cause thousands of dollars in damage before homeowners know they’re there.

Tips for homeowners:

Don’t panic but don’t ignore it. Seeing swarms outside is common, but if they're inside your home, call a licensed pest control professional.

Look for signs. Discarded wings, mud tubes, water stains, moisture buildup, and soft or hollow-sounding wood can all indicate a problem.

Reduce moisture. Termites thrive in damp environments and require moist wood to attack structures. Fix leaks and ensure proper drainage around your home.

Schedule regular inspections. Annual termite inspections are recommended, especially in high-risk areas like Louisiana.
