This chimney rebuild started with something much smaller: water getting into the masonry.
Cracks in the mortar crown allowed moisture to enter from the top, while the concrete brick and mortar continued absorbing water from the exterior. When temperatures dropped, that trapped moisture froze, expanded, and gradually damaged the masonry through repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
By the time the damage became obvious, routine repairs were no longer enough and the chimney needed to be rebuilt.
The homeowner takeaway? Exterior chimney maintenance matters. Regular inspections can identify cracked crowns, deteriorating mortar, and other entry points before water damage turns into a much larger repair.
