The MONARCH BUTTERFLY is a frequent Kansas visitor. Their migration covers up to 3,000 miles, and it takes about 4 generations to complete the trip.

CARPENTER ANTS are interesting creatures. Did you know that they do not actually eat wood?! They survive on proteins from insects and sweet substances, such as honeydew secreted by aphids. They excavate extensive tunnel systems, but they do not eat the wood, unlike termites. Carpenter ants do not possess the enzymes to digest it. They chew through decaying and solid wood solely to build galleries for their young.

Kansas is home to roughly 500 spider species. While most are harmless, our state has two notable species to watch out for...

BROWN RECLUSE: It is usually found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas. It features a dark violin shaped marking on its back. Their venom is hemotoxic, meaning it can cause a necrotic skin lesion.

BLACK WIDOW: Are shy, outdoor spiders that spin tangled irregular webs, often near the ground, in wood piles, stone walls, or undisturbed outbuildings. The females are a glossy black with a signature red hourglass on their underside. Their venom acts as a neurotoxin.

Spider factoids of the day...

Spiders are fascinating arachnids, not insects, with eight legs, blue blood, and silk stronger than steel! With over 50,000 species, they consume 400–800 million tons of insects annually. Some spin webs, while others, like jumping spiders, hunt, leaping 50 times their length!
