FORESTRY MULCHING A SMALL RESIDENTIAL BACKYARD IN ANOKA, MINNESOTA!

Today we're tackling a one-day forestry mulching project on a residential property in Anoka, MN. What started as an overgrown backyard filled with buckthorn, brush, volunteer trees, and an out-of-control arborvitae quickly turned into a great example of how I approach property access, cutting in, and selective land clearing.

One of the biggest challenges on any forestry mulching project isn't the mulching itself—it's making that first cut into the woods. In this video, I show exactly how I establish boundaries, use OnX to help identify property lines, create a safe access path, and "cut in" to a heavily overgrown area before opening everything up.

This project also included several larger leaning trees that the homeowner had previously received removal quotes for. The cost of traditional tree removal was more than the client wanted to spend, so the Bulldog stepped in to safely assist with felling and cleanup while already on site performing the forestry mulching work.

Along the way you'll see:
• Forestry mulching buckthorn and invasive brush
• Removing small trees and saplings
• Mulching an overgrown arborvitae hedge
• How I establish property boundaries before clearing
• The first punch into dense woods
• Selective land clearing techniques
• Residential forestry mulching in tight spaces
• Tree felling assistance for a homeowner
• Working around slopes, wet areas, and property lines
• Real-world small business forestry mulching

The client was thrilled with the transformation and finally gained access to areas of the property that had been inaccessible for years.

I'm Justin, the Bulldog. If you see me doing it, you can do it too—probably even better.

I’ve wanted to make this video for a long time. After spending real seat time running the Takeuchi TL12R2 in forestry mulching conditions, I finally felt like I had enough hours behind the controls to give an honest review.

This isn’t a dealership walkthrough. It isn’t sponsored. This is from a small business owner actually paying the bills with the machine.

And fair warning…

If your work truck has a platinum trim package and air-conditioned seats… this machine might not be for you.

In this video I go over why I chose the Takeuchi TL12R2 over CAT, Deere, Kubota, and others for forestry mulching and land clearing—and also the things that drive me absolutely crazy.

Topics covered:
🚜 Why I bought a Takeuchi TL12R2
🌲 Forestry mulching performance and real-world use
🧹 Debris management and cleaning tips
🔧 Hydraulic access, maintenance, and serviceability
⛽ Fueling, cooling system, and airflow discussion
🛞 Track tension, undercarriage durability, and keeping tracks on
🔥 Fire prevention and daily maintenance habits
💨 High flow attachment hookup features
❄️ HVAC, cab comfort, and operator fatigue
⚡ Reliability vs comfort tradeoffs
💵 New vs used pricing and ownership thoughts

My biggest takeaway?
This machine isn’t fancy.
It rides like a tank.
It feels like a tank.
But when I turn the key… it starts and goes to work.
For my business, reliability matters more than luxury.

If you run forestry equipment, compact track loaders, land clearing equipment—or you’re thinking about getting into the business—drop your machine choice below.
What are you running?

Forestry mulching a residential backyard in Anoka, Minnesota!
This project was a little over a half acre of thick brush, volunteer trees, and overgrown woods that the homeowner hadn't been able to access for years. One of the biggest challenges on any forestry mulching project isn't the mulching itself—it's figuring out where and how to make that first cut into the woods.
In this video, I walk through my process for "punching in" to a project, establishing boundaries with OnX Maps, creating a turnaround area, and working the property from the outside in. Once I have my perimeter established, I can focus on production instead of constantly worrying about property lines.
The homeowner also had a large leaning tree that another company had quoted at $1,800 to remove. As a widow on a budget, that wasn't an option. While I don't typically take down larger trees, I was able to safely help her remove the leaner while already on-site, making the property safer and more usable.
Topics covered in this video:
• How to cut into a forestry mulching project
• Establishing property boundaries with OnX Maps
• Residential forestry mulching
• Clearing overgrown woods and brush
• Removing a dangerous leaning tree
• Working around creeks, septic systems, and tight residential spaces
• Small business land clearing
The best part of this job wasn't the mulching—it was seeing the homeowner's reaction after finally being able to walk through and enjoy her property again.
If you enjoy forestry mulching, land clearing, tractors, skid steers, and small business content, consider subscribing and following along.

Today’s project was a mix of small tree removal, overgrown brush cleanup, and tackling an arborvitae bush that had completely gotten out of control.
Sometimes the fastest way to reclaim a property isn’t cutting everything down piece by piece — it’s pulling small trees and shrubs out by the roots and cleaning the area up properly the first time. We also brought in the forestry mulcher to grind down a massive overgrown arborvitae that had taken over the space.
Projects like this are a good reminder that land management isn’t always giant trees and huge acreage. A lot of residential work is:
Overgrown shrubs
Volunteer trees
Fence-line cleanup
Brush removal
Reclaiming usable yard space
And honestly, arborvitae can turn into an absolute jungle if left unchecked for too many years. 😂
In this video:

Forestry mulching overgrown arborvitae
Residential land clearing
Property cleanup and restoration
