Heavy Equipment Operator

Woods Excavating LLC is seeking a skilled and motivated Heavy Equipment Operator to join our growing team. This position is ideal for an operator who takes pride in their work, respects equipment, and understands how to balance production with precision.

Position Overview

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating a variety of construction equipment on excavation, utility, site development, and earthwork projects throughout southern Maine. Operators must be able to work independently, communicate effectively with crew members and truck drivers, and maintain a high standard of workmanship and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate excavators, bulldozers (small to large), skid steers, and other related equipment
• Operate equipment with and without GPS integration
• Perform bulk earthwork placement, delicate fine grading, and everything in between
• Work closely with laborers, foremen, and other operators to complete projects efficiently
• Communicate clearly with truck drivers regarding loading, spotting, and site logistics
• Assist with operating loaders, rollers, or water trucks when needed
• Maintain equipment with care while maximizing production and efficiency
• Follow all safety requirements, job specifications, and company standards

Ideal Skills & Experience

• Experience operating both Trimble GPS and non-GPS equipment
• Proficiency with skid steers and bulldozers of varying sizes
• Ability to perform both heavy production work and detailed finish work
• Strong situational awareness and the ability to “see the job” ahead of time
• Willingness to be a team player and help wherever needed on the site
• Respectful of equipment while still pushing for efficient, productive work
• Have reliable transportation to and from jobsites throughout southern Maine
• Clear communication skills and a professional attitude on the job site

• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on vehicles to ensure they are in safe working condition.

Key Responsibilities:

• Safely load, secure, transport, and unload heavy construction equipment (excavators, loaders, dozers, etc.)
• Maintain accurate trip logs, pre-trip/post-trip inspections, and DOT compliance records
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and job site personnel
• Maintain cleanliness and care of assigned equipment and truck
• Assist in basic equipment maintenance when needed

Requirements:

• Valid Class A CDL with clean driving record
• Minimum 2 years of experience hauling heavy equipment with a lowbed or similar trailer
• Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and safety procedures
• Ability to chain, bind, and properly secure equipment
• Must be dependable, self-motivated, and professional in demeanor
• Familiarity with Southern Maine roadways is a plus
• Tank endorsement preferred

● Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. (CDL class A or B without automatic restriction a plus)
● Maine state inspection license a plus
● Be able to safely operate heavy equipment and trucks
● Be able to lift 50lb frequently and 100lb occasionally
