Dan McKeage, Jr. Looking Forward to Sophomore Season at Wiscasset Speedway.
Dan McKeage, Jr., is entering his second year of full-time competition at Wiscasset Speedway, but he is no stranger to the racetrack. He grew up in a racing family, following in the footsteps of his father, Dan Sr., grandfather Lyman, and even his mother, Laura.
He is now carving his own path in the racing world and turning heads as he does so. Last season alone, he finished in the top three in points in both the Portland Glass Strictly Streets (2nd) and the Norm’s Used Cars Pro Stocks (tied for 3rd). He was also awarded the “Sportsmanship Award” for the Pro Stocks, and the Naughty 40 Racing team also received the “Team of the Year” honor at the conclusion of the season.
Although he is now making strides at a new track, Dan will never forget where he came from. He began his racing career at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and made countless memories at the track. His favorite memory is winning his first feature race at the conclusion of the 2021 race season, which was the same night the track decided to close for good. It was certainly a bittersweet moment for both Dan and his family - and one that he will never forget. In his own words, “I was just grateful that I got a win at my home track before it closed”.
Dan grew up participating in team sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. He played all three sports throughout high school and feels like these team-building experiences translate to racing as well. “Participating in sports my whole life taught me about the importance and power of teamwork. At the track, there isn’t just a driver. We are a team, from my dad to Tony to my friends and family, that show up every week,” he shares.
One of the team's most vital members is Dan’s twin brother Shawn McKeage, who serves as his spotter in both divisions. Shawn is always in Dan’s ear, guiding him through the trials and tribulations of every feature race. Dan says that their relationship means a lot to him, and being twins certainly helps them communicate and understand each other better, making for a winning combination.
While he’s not racing, Dan enjoys spending time with his family and friends as well as playing sports. He also keeps busy during the off season, studying at SMCC. He will soon be graduating and transferring to a local 4-year college to complete his degree in Business Management. In the future, he hopes to join his dad and brother running the family construction business but he’s also become interested in becoming an insurance agent as well.
Dan has a great future ahead of him no matter what path he decides to take. For now, he is focused on returning to Wiscasset Speedway for his sophomore season in the Strictly Streets and Pro Stocks. He thinks that the track atmosphere is great and is a big fan of the improvements that track owners Richard & Vanessa Jordan make every season.
In his own words, “I’m looking forward to maintaining and building off of last year's success. I’d like to compete for wins every week and learn more about myself as a driver in order to gain skills I need to be a better racer”.
The sky's the limit for Dan McKeage, Jr. in 2024. You can catch the Naughty 40 machine back in action for the Group 1 season opener at Wiscasset Speedway on Sarturday, April 20th at 2:00 pm.
