The Third Wave is an inclusive, open-minded student organization at the University of North Dakota that is wholly feminist in its mission but not ignorant of the other forms oppression may take. The Third Wave recognizes that there is prevailing social inequality in this country, and seek to redress this. The Third Wave derives its namesake from the feminist timeline we have experienced in the Uni

ted States. The first wave was characterized largely by the push for women's suffrage and increased educational opportunities. The 1960s ushered in an incomprably enormous shift in the country's social landscape that was characterized by many socially-based movements toward social equity. Women were not exempt from this, and this wave of feminism focused largely on dismantling the cultural expectations for women that had earlier limited their social roles and hampered their personal and professional opportunities. The Third Wave is characteristic of the last wave, in that we now understand feminism as a multi-faceted, inclusive agent that must (in order to properly consider the concerns of all women) address other forms of interlocking and intersectional oppressions. To that end, we seek to redress inequality not only in terms of gender and sexuality, but also in our consideration of socioeconomic inequality, racial and ethnic discrimination, and discrimination against those with physical and mental disabilities.
