A little gross if you know what you’re looking at, but this septic tank is a prime example of why you pump your septic tanks on a regular basis( state of Nebraska recommends every 3 years). Septic tanks are designed to reach a capacity of these type of solids to 40% of the tank volume and then it needs to be emptied. This customer waited 20 years and both of the septic tanks were 90% full of solids like this. There was 8” of actual water in the tanks and the rest was this muddy type consistency. No doubt that these solids were overflowing into the leech lines and plugging the soil pores essentially ruining your leech lines. Maintenance is important folks. With everything being more expensive these days, don’t wait until your house line backs up to have the tank pumped.

Did you have access to fresh, cold water these last few weeks? Thank a plumber, well driller, and city water employees for making that possible.

What is a septic system? Essentially, broken down into its most basic form- a septic system is a water recycling system. Similar to recycling products, many people aren’t sure what “products” can go in a “ water recycler”? Remember, this is water you may drink again someday… no condoms, no cooking oils or oils of any kind , no food waste, no tampons, no wrappers or garbage of any kind, no paint, even our soaps can be troublesome, no chemicals, no cleaners. The only acceptable answers are the waste discharge from your body, toilet paper, and water. Remember, you or someone else may get the pleasure of consuming recycled water and you most likely already have, and don’t worry, as long as you heed the do’s and dont’s and proper installation and maintenance of your septic system it will make sure that the recycled water is the cleanest by filtering it through the earths’ soils for miles and miles.

A short video to incorporate a visual for customers who don’t get to see the process. This sludge layer was thick enough that it would not “flow” to my hose, I ended up having to use a garden hose to water it down so I could get it all in the truck.

Hello potential customers and existing customers, with the covid virus coming into its full swing in our area and more families and students being home, the hydraulic load on your septic system will certainly be stressed out. A few tips to help manage water consumption

#1. Make sure that you do not have toilets leaking by the flapper inside the tank or water going over the overflow tube inside the tank. A good way to test your flappers off you aren’t sure is to get some food coloring and put 15 drops inside the toilet tank( not the bowl). Stir it around so the water becomes saturated with the color, notify everyone in the household not to use this toilet for about 20 minutes. After 15-20 minutes check the BOWL of the toilet, as long as no one has flushed or messed with said toilet, if there is any colored water in the BOWL then you have water leaking inside the toilet. This will either be the flapper or the water level inside the toilet tank, or it could also be both. Replace flapper(s), make necessary changes to water level so it rests at 1/4”-1/2” below the overflow tube inside the tank.

#2- Dont think of this as a great time to get caught up on all of your laundry, a septic system is designed for an average daily flow and adequate resting periods such as when you are away at work or school and during the night when you are sleeping. With more individuals being home all through out the day your system is seeing above average daily flows. This doesn’t mean that you cannot do laundry, just do a load or two per day and try and skip a few days in between washing. This should also be done even if you are not home all day. Washing 5-10 loads of laundry per day stresses your system out and can cause premature failure of your drain field.

#3. Do not use unnecessary amounts of bleach or any other chemical that may harm the (helpful) bacteria inside your septic tank, killing the bacteria by over using harsh chemicals and cleaners will have a negative effect on the way the septic tank breaks down waste.

#4- leaky faucets...get them repaired or replaced.

#5- Avoid extra long showers and try to take more showers than baths in this time, shower heads put out 2 gallons/minute, a bath can use as much as 25-60 gallons of water. A 10 minute shower will use 20 gallons of water.

JB Septic Pumping is currently available to help with your septic pumping needs and available to answer questions, should you have any, thank you all and remain safe during this time.

P**p and toilet paper don’t just magically disentegrate or disappear in your septic tank! Get your tanks pumped before they fill up with the nasties and clog your drain field!

Not sure when the last time you had your septic tank pumped...? It’s most likely time then. The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality recommends pumping the solids from your septic every three years to prevent the broken down solids from entering your drainfield and plugging the soil pores so it will not leach into the soil adequately. There is no effective way to reverse the solids from “plugging” the soil pores other than to replace the drainfield which is why proper maintenance is important. You wouldn’t wait to change the oil in your vehicle 10,000 miles past the manufacturers recommendations. Don’t put off preventative maintenance on something as important as being able to shower and flush your toilets.
