I flew down to Boston last Friday for a follow-up appointment with my surgeon at Mass General Hospital. Everything seems to be healing quite well. Almost no pain anywhere now. I'm still on light duty until at least the end of September to give more time for the nerves and hernia repairs to take a solid hold. (Apparently, my Doctor knows how I am when it comes to working!) I'll start back in part time in October. I probably won't work full time again and mostly only close to home. I've had enough away jobs. I will, however still be available for consultations and detailed assessments to help clients understand what they need to do on their buildings.

I flew down and back via PALS and really enjoyed the flights. The pilots who take time out of their busy schedules to make sure patients can get the help they need are an incredible resource. I can't thank them enough for what they do. They use their own planes (Most of the time! Sometimes they borrow one from a Buddy). In both directions, the pilots let me sit in the co-pilots seat. They also took time to explain all of the instruments they use to make their trips safely.

We flew in an Eclipse Aviation - 500, twin engine jet on the way down and a Cirrus - SR22, single engine propeller plan on the way back. We reached an altitude of 30,000 ft on the way down and 7,000 ft on the way back. The Cirrus has a parachute on the plane in case the engine stalls. Fortunately, we didn't need it. The slower ride home was much more scenic.

Due to a large number of images which I would rather not lose track of, my personal email has just about filled up. I will now be using [email protected] for all company correspondence. Hopefully, that will get me through another couple of decades!

I had a little project today that I thought was kinda fun. The first image is the original top. The 2nd image is the new top. The 3rd image shows the base with the new top.

I have a pretty smart Son! Anthony and I have been building cabinet doors for the Galerie project. (I'll post an update with photos when they actually look like doors.) The router bits we're using for this project aren't exactly inexpensive. The top bearing burned out on the rail bit leaving a bit of a pungent odor in the shop when trying to use it. (Not to mention it being hard on the wood.) For those who aren't aware, pine is a dirty wood to work with. The sap in it doesn't ever really dry and is very hard on tools. I showed him what the problem was, he went back to sanding, then said "Don't you have an old pair of roller blades somewhere? They use the same bearing." I sent him upstairs after the blades. We pulled a wheel off and sure enough, same bearing. I put it on the bit and was back in business. If that one burns out too, I still have 15 spares! If he keeps coming up with money saving ideas like this, I'll never let him leave again! I never would have thought of that. Leave it to the skater kids! Thanks Bud.

Musée project continues. Earlier this season, we were attempting to replace the sill covers on the Musée as they had been damaged over the years by water and ice damage. When we attempted to install the new ones, we found that the screws were not biting into the sills. We removed the wooden covers and found the sills had rotted more than halfway through in many places and were experiencing at least some rot over most of the length of the building on both sides of the building. The photos below show the rot in the tower sills and the replacement of the last run of this part of the project. We installed the last pieces on November 10, 2020. It's hard to believe that looking at the photos! The temperature hit the 70° mark. Just over a week ago, we were scraping ice and snow off of our materials to replace the sills on the other side of the building. It was a lot of hard work but the Musée now has new feet to stand on. Thanks to the hard work of Anthony Verderber, Nick Epstein and Keith Brown, we got it done. Now to replace the insulation and boards and (finally) install the new covers. That's Anthony escaping at the end!

Calvary update #4. With the amazing warm weather we've been having, I was finally able to complete the first coat of paint on the bottom of the Calvary! I still have a few touch ups to do in the Spring (or if we get super lucky and have another week like this one before then), but it is all sealed for the winter.

Calvary update 3

After completing the masonry work, I started painting the Calvary in the original grey colour. The attached photos show the first coat of paint over the statues and upper base. The next step will be to complete the grey and then paint the cross and highlight a few areas so everything stands out better. (The first picture is off a bit as I was shooting into the sun.)

While waiting for the Calvary to cure, we began working on the Crypt, also in the Lille Cemetery. Step 1 again is cleaning it up to remove the worn paint and any loose rock and mortar so we can make the repairs. We ended the day with a little surprise shower and double rainbow over the Musée.

Calvary update. Phase 2. We put some forms around the base and started applying mortar to repair it. After it cures a few days, we will apply a top coat to seal the structure and then repaint it in the original colour of grey with a brown cross. More updates to follow.
