Why We Build with SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels)

Insulation isn’t something we add to our buildings.
It’s something we design into the structure itself.
That’s why many of our homes are built using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

SIPs replace traditional stick framing with a solid, continuous panel — insulation bonded between structural skins. The result is a building shell that’s:

• Exceptionally airtight
• Structurally rigid
• Reduction of thermal gaps common in stud walls
• Fast to assemble with fewer on-site variables

In a cold-climate build, that matters.

Traditional framing relies on dozens of cavities, seams, and penetrations — each one a potential leak. SIP construction dramatically reduces those weak points, creating a shell that performs more like a thermos than a drafty box.

We expect them to provide expansive views while also performing as part of a continuous, insulated building envelope—especially in the extreme cold we experience in Northern Minnesota.

In many homes, code-minimum double-pane windows are the weak link. Cold interior glass can create discomfort and condensation risk, even when the window itself is airtight. What often feels like a “draft” is actually convective cooling, not air leakage.

At Works Construction, we treat windows as high-performance components of the building envelope. Our Above Code approach includes:

• Low whole-unit U-values
• Triple-pane glazing as a cold-climate standard
• Precision air sealing and high-performance flashing
• Multi-point locking hardware for long-term airtightness

Condensation occurs when interior glass temperatures fall below the indoor air’s dew point. In cold climates, triple-pane windows are far more effective at keeping interior surfaces warm and comfortable.
