The 8L90 humbled me last night.

I ended up wearing about a gallon of transmission fluid because of one tiny mistake. I installed an upgrade kit, and a single spring was installed backwards. That was enough to cause a complete loss of function.

I flipped the spring around, got everything dialed in, and it worked exactly as it should.

The takeaway: every single detail matters on these transmissions. Slow down, double-check everything, and don’t create problems you’ll spend hours chasing.

I’m back on another 47RE now, but I have to admit I really enjoyed working on the 8-speed.

I get it right or make it right no matter the time spent because quality is more important than quantity. This was a “new ATS upgrade kit” has wires crossed and of course the solenoid has problems.

I am moving towards a full-time transmission repair situation, currently I am by appointment only. On average I am 1500-2500 cheaper than most shops and I take more pride in my work. I go beyond just building the transmission and I fix the reason the transmission failed in the first place.
