Sometimes the hardest part of a task isn't doing it. It's getting started.
For young adults with ADHD, autism, and executive-functioning challenges, there's something I call the startup cost.
Think about a task your young adult needs to complete.
They may understand what needs to be done. They may even have the skills to do it.
But getting started requires organizing their thoughts, deciding where to begin, gathering what they need, and shifting their attention toward the task.
All of that happens before the actual work begins!
For some young adults, that startup cost becomes the bottleneck.
Instead of asking, *“Why haven't you started yet?”* try asking:
“What's the smallest first step we could make easier?”
Sometimes reducing the demands of getting started is what makes follow-through possible.
Don't just make the task smaller. Make the starting line easier to cross.
