: Looking back at 2013, when our Oscar Renda Contracting team delivered the 80 MGD expansion of Houston's Southeast Water Purification Plant. This massive infrastructure upgrade featured extensive piping, new treatment modules, pump stations, a 13.4 MG ground storage tank, and advanced SCADA/security systems, alongside key enhancements to the chemical feed and sludge thickening facilities.

Built to sustain the growing water demands of the Houston area, this landmark project earned the Associated Builders and Contractors Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Construction. Notably, it stood as the largest single public works project by dollar value in the city's history at the time of completion.

Before June 6th draws to a close, we want to pause and reflect on our nation's past, and on the role American Bridge was honored to play in it.

Eighty-two years ago today, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy. Carrying many of them ashore were Landing Ship Tanks, the amphibious vessels built to deliver tanks, troops and equipment directly onto a defended beach. American Bridge built them.

From 1941 to 1945, American Bridge dedicated its capacity to the war effort, manufacturing 199 LSTs at its yard in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. At peak, nearly 13,000 people were on the line, and many of the welders were women stepping onto the shipyard floor for the first time, forming some of the first all-women welding crews in the country. Each ship ran more than 100 yards long.

Those ships earned their place in history. American Bridge LSTs supported the D-Day landings at Normandy and the island-hopping campaigns across the Pacific, with vessels like LST-262 and LST-266 each earning two battle stars for their service.

The LSTs were only part of the effort. AB also delivered aircraft-carrier components, cargo ships, a steel mill in Utah, aluminum plants in Tennessee and strategic bridges that still carry traffic today.

More than 80 years later, that same spirit of building what the moment demands still drives us.

American Bridge remembers and honors all Americans who proudly served in WWII. Their courage and sacrifice carried the work we built, and we hold their memory with gratitude.

This week's highlights a major milestone in progress at the Elm Fork Water Treatment Plant in Carrollton, Texas. The team is actively pouring concrete for the Operations Wing deck.

This new floor is being divided into two distinct sections. The first half must be completely finished before the team can begin pouring the second side. Once fully completed, the deck will accommodate all key operational units. This includes the chemical room, the electrical room with switchboards and MCCs, the blower room, and the control room.

Reaching this active stage is a crucial step forward for the site. It opens up opportunities for subcontractors to proceed with the next phases of work and accelerate our overall project progress.

Behind every great leader is a project that tested them. For Tom Charles, the Kirkman Road Extension in Orlando, Florida was exactly that. It was an intense and high profile build. The project required massive technical coordination through an active tourist hub with tight utility constraints.

Tom shares how executing this award winning urban corridor became a standout milestone in his career. He also explains how managing its constant moving parts ultimately defined his philosophy on team communication.

This is highlighting the "Circus Bridge" in Venice gets its name from the city's colorful history. For years, Venice served as the winter headquarters for Barnum & Bailey’s Circus, setting up camp right next to where the bridge stands today. While the circus is no longer stationed there, their legacy lives on through this iconic structure!

In 2005, Southland subsidiary Johnson Bros. completed the replacement of this major bascule bridge, which spans SR 41 over the Intracoastal Waterway for FDOT District 1. The massive project included a brand-new control tower and three miles of fresh roadway. When open, the bridge center span boasts a 90-foot horizontal clearance and unlimited vertical clearance.
We are incredibly proud of this project, which took home FDOT’s 2005 Best in Construction of Major Bridge Award and earned a nomination for the national AGC Marvin Black Partnering Award.
