One of our favorite little loves for container gardening in our zone.

🌴 MADAGASCAR PALM 🌴

STARTER POTS • $18 EACH

Looking for something different? Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei) is an exotic succulent with a thick, spiny trunk and a crown of glossy green leaves. Mature plants can become spectacular statement plants and may produce fragrant white flowers. 🤍🌿

☀️ LIGHT: Full sun to very bright light. The more sun, the better.

💧 WATER: Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry well before watering again. Do not keep wet or soggy.

🪴 SOIL: Use a fast-draining cactus/succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes.

🌡️ ZONES 7–9: Madagascar Palm is not reliably winter-hardy outdoors in these zones. Grow it in a container and enjoy it outdoors during warm weather, then bring it inside before temperatures drop below about 45F. Keep it bright and considerably drier during winter.

🌴 SIZE: Slow-growing at first, but with time it can develop into an impressive, tall specimen.

🤍 FLOWERS: Mature, well-grown plants can produce clusters of beautiful white blooms.

⚠️ GOOD TO KNOW: The trunk has sharp spines, and the milky sap can irritate skin. Keep away from children and pets.

As a reminder, your color-changing hardy hibiscus “Confederate Rose” trees do not bloom until early Fall. Here is our mother tree, “Big Betty” today against an 8 foot fence. Some yellowing and shedding of lower leaves is normal. This variety is officially known as Hibiscus mutabilis— or “changing hibiscus” due to the blooms that open pale pink and darken to crimson.

Check underneath the leaves weekly for mites, aphids, and whiteflies.

In September you can switch to a bloom-boosting fertilizer with a higher middle number (phosphorous).

October is the sweet spot in the Dallas area for these beauties to show off. They’ll flower heavily until the first hard freeze then die back to the ground until February-March. Mulch them well for winter to help them overwinter. Cut them back to 4” in February. They will rebound as a multi-branching tree that grows in a V shape.

**We do have a few potted Confederate Roses available, now 6 feet tall. You can still plant them now. 1 gallon pot $45. Delivery is offered. We do not ship at this time. Pickup is in 76051.

This heirloom, pass-along variety of hardy hibiscus has been around in the USA since pre-Civil War. No longer mass-produced in nurseries.

Heads up, Texas friends! We are planning another trip around the state on Tuesday, 8/5 with plant pitstops along the way. We might be coming to a town near you. Need plants? MOTHER LODE!

Just located two very rare native Texas hibiscus in the wild. Hibiscus striatus lambertianus (purple) and Neches River Rose Mallow (white). I found a native stand and nearly choked when I saw the bonus mallow under it.

A few ant bites and rubber boots later, I have them.

We are bringing them home for YOU!

Update on our plant pit stops tomorrow through central and southeast Texas:
Our plan is to load up at 8:30 am in Grapevine and start heading south along I-35 towards Waco, Temple, Salado (we see you!) Pflugerville, then head over towards Lockhart, Giddings, Gonzales, LaGrange, Yoakum, ending in Victoria.

We need everyone meeting up with us to text us if you haven’t already.

We have some confederate roses (hardy hibiscus) still available. Message us if you want in.

We can’t wait to meet all our new fancy friends! 🌸 If you can’t make it happen this time, we will see you next trip down.

We are traveling south tomorrow to Victoria, Texas. (Right in the heart of where the storm is expected, we are aware). If you are near the cities listed below and would like a rare Confederate Rose Hardy hibiscus, let us know fast so we can arrange a plant pitstop.

These grow 12’ a year, die back in winter in zone 7-8, and return in spring. In zones 9-10, they may not die back all the way or at all.

They bloom in fall, opening as a shade of pale pink and turning crimson.

These are not mass-produced since the 1980’s, and are now considered to be a pass-along heirloom plant.

3 gallon pot, 5-6’ tall. $45. Cash and Zelle.
