This weekend. Absolutely gorgeous weather...for March. Spring arrives on Friday, with any luck it will bring more rain to the foothills and snow to the Sierra. March is a slower month for us. Partially due to tax season but also due to transition of weather. Everyone is waiting for the rain to end and the oak to drop their "dangling things" called catkins. (Catkins are the male function of acorn making. Messy and causes allergies, but very important to the acorn.) We appreciate this time as it allows us to get our taxes done and get our own yard ready for the transition to Spring.

Now is a good time to have Pat come out to give you an estimate on moss removal, metal roof maintnenace, siding or deck repair and other task outside of roof and gutter maintenace. We will be scheduling those tasks soon! (530) 272-4912 or text (530) 615-9537

****Snow****

Quick conditions check before I head out the door this morning. I’ll have a more detailed look at the forecast later today.

It is currently snowing down to 2000-2500 with some light accumulations in town. Chain controls on Hwy 20 at Nevada Street to I80. CalTrans web page does not show chain restrictions on Hwy 49/20 through town but a reader said the chains required signs had been flipped so not sure what the situation is there. Chains required on Hwy 174 between Grass Valley (race St.) and Colfax. I80 is closed westbound due to weather and spinouts. Chains required eastbound Alta to Stateline. Tree blocking the road Penn Valley Rd at Pleasant Ln. There are no reported power outages at this time. These conditions can and will change through the day.

Rain and show through the day, tapering off a bit with some breaks this afternoon. Snow levels fluctuating between 2000-3000 this morning, lowering to 2000-2500 this afternoon. Snow showers tomorrow with snow levels 1500-2500.

Update later today.

Here we go ❄️ Our schedule will be affected next week. If your appointment is effected we will reach out to you and schedule as soon as we can.

Remember to lessons from years past...have plenty of food and water on hand, have your go bag ready and your emergency plan in place. This is not expected to be a Snomageddon event it is expected to be significant and will effect low elevations. Stay safe Nevada County!

****Coldest Storm of the Season****
**Foothill Snow Likely**

Details coming into better focus as the countdown begins for a strong and cold storm cycle beginning late Sunday and lasting through much of next week. There is a good chance of snow in the mid-foothills (including Grass Valley/Nevada City). Best chance of foothill snow will be overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. This will be a significant snow event in the Sierra where 4-6 feet of snow is possible over Donner Summit through the period.

Mostly sunny today with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. Partly to mostly cloudy Saturday. Chance of rain developing late in the day Sunday as a surface low off the coast begins to move inland. If the low stalls, it could delay the arrival of precipitation to Sunday night. Rain Sunday night and snow in the mountains. If you are headed over Donner Summit for the three-day weekend it would be best to make your return trip on Sunday. Monday will likely include difficult winter driving conditions and the possibility of long delays.

On Monday into Tuesday, a cold airmass will dive south into Northern California as a deep upper-level trough from the Gulf of Alaska develops and merges with the original trough over the West Coast. The arrival of this second trough will bring additional periods of rain through Wednesday/Thursday with low elevation snow. Heavy snow will continue to accumulate over the Sierra.

Snow levels will begin 5000-6000 on Sunday and drop from there, dropping on Monday down to 3000-4000. Could start to see some snow in the upper foothills late Monday/Monday night. Folks up Hwy 20 past 5-Mile House will start to see some snow Monday. Snow levels drop to 2000-3000 on Tuesday during the day. Heaviest snow looks to be during the day on Tuesday. Lowest snow levels will be Tuesday night when we could see some light accumulations *possibly* as low as 1000-1500. Snow tapers off to showers on Wednesday with snow levels 2000-3000. Scattered light showers continue on Thursday with snow levels 2500-3500. We could see 6-10” in town (2500’) through the period. Could see a dusting to 1-2” down to the lower foothills (1000-1500’). Could see 12-16” in the upper foothills. And finally, we are expecting 4-6 feet at Donner Summit through Thursday.

Expecting partly cloudy and dry conditions over the weekend.

I may have an update over the weekend to tune-up the forecast. Photo below taken February, 2018.

January was a beautiful month! We appreciated the break in the weather as it allowed us to get caught up with the dozens of appointments we had to reschedule due to the December rains. Realistically, we know that there is more rain and possibly snow to come as March is still ahead. We could use more snow on the mountain tops!

There are still appointments in February and we are scheduling through the Spring for roof and gutter maintenace or repair. If you are on the maintenance list for January through March, you should be getting a call/email/text soon. We've been getting many requests for moss removal. We will get to those once winter has passed and the days are longer and warmer.

Thank you Nevada County for trusting us since 2009!

****Wet This Weekend****

Just a quick update as I’m travelling in the New England area trying to catch some fall colors. So far it’s been a little early for peak color, but still beautiful. Below is a shot near Boston (not Nevada County).

Wanted to give everyone a heads up that it looks like a change in the weather pattern will bring some wet weather to Northern California over the upcoming weekend. In the meantime, we can expect partly cloudy to mostly sunny and warm conditions through Friday. Highs in the mid 70s today and Tuesday. Cooler Wednesday through Friday with highs in the mid 60s.

A trough will set up along the West Coast by late Friday. Two systems will drop down into the region. They will pull in some moisture from the south, and although I have been seeing other sources beginning to headline an “atmospheric river storm” this will not be what one would expect in the winter. Remember, an “atmospheric river” is not a type of storm, it is a setup of conditions where a storm system taps into a pool of moisture otherwise unassociated with the storm itself. That looks to be the case this weekend, but it is a weak setup and I’m not expecting a large amount of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation will be focused to the north into Oregon and Washington.

The first system looks to arrive Friday night into Saturday morning with another front late Sunday. Rainfall forecasts by the models right now indicate a wide range of 0.50-2.00 inches over the foothills. We’ll have a better idea as we get closer.

Stay tuned!

A storm is coming, big enough to shake up the schedule. ⛈️❄️🌬

****Winter Returns****

I’m back!! Just in time for some March action.

We have a series of storms that will impact California over the next week. After mild and mostly sunny conditions today and Tuesday, the first system arrives overnight Tuesday with rain likely across the foothills by sunrise Wednesday. This system has a good amount of moisture, and we may see 2+ inches of rain in the foothill belt by the time it winds down late Thursday. Heaviest rain will be during the day on Wednesday, especially in the afternoon when the front is forecast to move through. Below is the GFS model for 2:00pm on Wednesday.

On Thursday the front will be to the east with scattered showers, mostly over the mountains by Thursday afternoon. We are entering into that time of the season when the sun is at a higher angle which promotes thunderstorm activity. Best chance for thunderstorms will be in the valley but we may see some cells migrate up into the foothills. Always a chance of brief heavy rain and hail if one passes overhead. Winds will be moderately strong, mainly on Wednesday with gusts up to 30-40mph.

Ok….here’s the big bugaboo. Snow. I’m already seeing wild comments on social media about heavy snow in the foothills. There is a chance snow levels could lower down to 1500-2500 but this will not be a big snow event below 3500. Best chance for snow at those lower elevations will be Wednesday night into Thursday morning. This will be after the front has moved through so the heaviest precipitation will be past. This is not a convergence of cold air and a frontal system, but a more typical inflow of colder air behind the front. I think there is a pretty good chance of some light accumulations by mid-day Thursday, but this will not be a high-impact snow for the foothills – if any.

This will however be a good snow producer in the mountains with 2 feet of new snow expected over Donner Pass and with the colder nature of the storm we will likely see some good snow accumulations at Lake level around Truckee/Tahoe City of 1 to maybe 2 feet.

Another system will move through on Friday into Friday night. This system will be weaker with most of the energy staying north over the Shasta/Lassen region. It looks like snow levels will remain just above town, but we may see snowflakes or very light snow on Friday. The upper foothills may see some additional light accumulations. A third storm arrives Saturday night into Sunday. This is still 6-7 days out but right now it has the potential to be as strong as the Wednesday/Thursday storm. Stay tuned!
