New builds out here start as hard-packed dirt. On this one our crew installed:

A new sprinkler system
Drought-tolerant plants and trees
Sod for a usable lawn area
Rock and mulch beds
A concrete pathway along the side of the house
Boulders to anchor the beds

Rock and drought-tolerant plants go where turf isn’t needed, which keeps water use down. The sod goes where the family will actually use it.

Finally got the drone up over this Berthoud xeriscape we finished earlier this season, and it's filled in nicely.

We cut the lawn down to one usable patch of grass and turned the rest into low-water planting beds, rock and mulch areas, and flagstone paths connecting each part of the yard: the fire pit patio, a flagstone bistro patio, the garden, and the back of the property.
Less mowing, less water, and a lot more places to actually use the yard.

A lot of crews dump polymeric sand on a flagstone patio and sweep it around until the joints look full. We don't.
On this Greeley patio, every joint was filled by hand, packed, and cleaned off before we wet it down. It takes longer, but the joints stay full, the stone stays clean, and the patio holds up for years instead of washing out after one season.
