In Gill, MA, we recently completed a severe oil furnace puff back cleanup after the homeowner returned from being away for a long time and found the house filled with thick black soot webs. This was not ordinary dust or minor smoke residue. A malfunctioning oil furnace caused an extensive puff back, sending oily soot throughout the home and even into hidden wall cavities, where it formed dense soot cobwebs on surfaces and inside concealed spaces.
Losses like this require much more than wiping down visible residue. Puff back soot is oily, invasive, and difficult to remove. It can spread through framing, insulation, vents, electrical penetrations, and other hidden areas, leaving contamination behind long after the visible damage is noticed. Our crew performed detailed soot cleanup, removed unsalvageable building materials, and addressed damaged areas that could not be saved through cleaning alone. As part of the restoration process, we also replaced the old heating system with propane.
During reconstruction, the structure was brought up to current building code and energy code requirements. That is an important part of restoring a property properly after a major soot event, because the goal is not just cleanup, but safe and lasting repairs for the property owner. The heavy cleanup and repairs are complete, and we are now working through the finishing touches to bring the home back together after a very extensive loss inside the home.
