Yesterday the weather cooperated with us so that, with the help of the NC Forest Service, a prescribed burn could be done on a clients property. When applied correctly, prescribed fire is an excellent tool that not only benefits timber production but also has tremendous wildlife benefit.

Timber cruising in tall timber today.

While cruising a tract of timber today, I came across a bottomland hardwood stand where all the Ash trees in the stand had been killed by Emerald Ash Borer. You can see the telltale signs of the serpentine shaped galleries and the D-shaped exit holes that are indicative of EAB in the pictures. This insect has the potential to completely wipe out both White and Green ash species in North America.

Despite the impending COVID-19 global pandemic, both housing and lumber markets trended upward in the fourth quarter of 2020. While hardwood timber products were down slightly, all pine product stumpage prices were up in North Carolina. Read more on timber market updates in our recent publication.
