I have a complicated relationship with the word "always."
Here's why: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Three commands. One word that doesn't bend, repeated three different ways.
Always. Continually. All circumstances.
I used to interpret that as an ideal goal — an outcome. Something I'd earn once my circumstances finally cooperated.
I figured "rejoice" meant "be happy." So naturally I was waiting for my circumstances to improve before I could obey.
Then the clarity hit: Rejoice always isn't happiness. Happiness is a reaction to what happened today.
Joy is a reaction to who is still here. You can be sad and still rejoice. You can cry and still know He's present.
Pray continually isn't about posture. It's about connection. It's the difference between a phone call and a phone line. Check in, not check up.
Giving thanks in all circumstances isn't saying the pain is good. It's saying God is still good in the pain. Not gratitude for the storm. Gratitude for the hand holding yours through it all.
I thought God's will was a destination I had to earn. But this verse says His will is a rhythm. A loop. Rejoice. Pray. Give thanks. Repeat. Not because your circumstances are perfect.
Because His presence is constant. 🤌
You don't need better circumstances. You need better awareness.
Jesus loves you. And I do too. ❤️
