Seven cracked tiles in a Taylors shower, and the reason is one most people don't expect.
Cracked tile comes from improper installation and materials selection, or from thermal expansion and movement of the shower itself. On this one the tile had been butted directly into tile at the corners. ANSI specs require silicone at a change of plane, but with the tile pressed tight there was no room to install it properly. What was in the joint was visual, not functional. Tight joints across a wall are fine. Tile into tile at a corner is not.
We removed the damaged tile without damaging the waterproofing behind it, sealed the perimeter of the untouched tile to protect what was still sound, and brushed on a liquid membrane per manufacturer specs. Then the new tile was hand-polished with a diamond grit pad until it fit the tight joints. Two days, start to finish.
