Designing a custom home is a journey that begins with listening, imagination, and collaboration. From the first floor plan and architectural sketches to the smallest details and the finished home, working with a licensed architect should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience that transforms your ideas into something truly personal.

Great architecture is about more than creating a beautiful house. It’s about thoughtful planning, professional guidance, and designing a home that reflects how you live, respects your investment, and brings you joy for generations to come.

For this custom mountain home in The Cliffs at Walnut Cove near Asheville, North Carolina, I wanted to create a more contemporary architectural expression that still felt warm, comfortable, and inviting. Expansive windows bring the surrounding mountain landscape into the home, while soaring ceilings, carefully detailed beams, and an open stairway with cascading pendant lights create a wonderful sense of volume and connection between spaces. The restrained interior palette of warm wood floors, soft neutrals, and crisp architectural detailing provides a beautiful backdrop for bold contemporary artwork. In the primary bath, richly veined natural stone, glass, and sculptural fixtures create a luxurious retreat. Throughout the home, natural light, thoughtful proportions, and a strong connection to the outdoors define a modern approach to mountain living.

As the days grow shorter and the evenings arrive a little earlier, we begin to appreciate our homes in a different way.

Thoughtful architecture embraces the changing seasons, capturing natural light, creating warmth through authentic materials, and providing inviting spaces to gather, relax, and enjoy the beauty beyond our windows.

Whether it’s a glowing fireplace, a sheltered outdoor room, or a perfectly framed mountain view, good design makes every season something to look forward to.

Great architecture doesn’t simply shelter us from the seasons. It helps us appreciate them.

Your mountain home should be more than a beautiful house with a view. It should feel as though it belongs to the landscape.

Thoughtful architecture begins with understanding the site, the views, the natural light, and most importantly, the way you want to live.

From natural stone and timber to carefully framed mountain views and inviting outdoor living spaces, every decision should contribute to a home that feels authentic, personal, and timeless.

At Craft Architecture, I work directly with clients designing custom mountain homes throughout Western North Carolina and lake homes in South Carolina, including Lake Keowee.

If you’re dreaming of building a home in the mountains or along the lake, I’d welcome a conversation about your property, your ideas, and the possibilities.

A home is so much more than its architecture.

It’s where family gathers around the fire, where friends linger long after dinner, and where an ordinary afternoon becomes a memory we treasure.

When I design a home, I think about more than the rooms themselves. I think about the life that will unfold within them.

Because in the end, the most beautiful thing about a home isn’t what we see. It’s what we experience.

What space in your home means the most to you?

We had a great time celebrating the launch of my new book “The Architect’s Advantage” last week! Friends, colleagues, clients, and craftsmen, received a complimentary copy of the book, had a few drinks while I inscribed a personal note in each! Many thanks to City Club of Greenville and Weaver Films + Photography | Weddings for the great photography!

The Architect’s Advantage: What every homeowner should know before they build.

10/20/2026

The architect’s advantage is working with someone who can see the possibilities and anticipate the complications before you build. In my book, The Architect’s Advantage, I share how thoughtful design and experienced guidance help you protect your budget, make informed decisions, and create a home that reflects the way you want to live.
