Fall on Lake Cherokee. From the dock to the great room, this lake house was made for exactly this time of year: cool mornings by the water, warm evenings by the fire and color in every direction.

More of Ashfield, and a few of our favorite rooms we haven't shared yet. A living room under a beamed ceiling, a breakfast nook full of morning light, a laundry room in deep green and a bath wrapped in wallpaper, each with a personality all its own and all of it unmistakably one house. Architecture by Vinyet Architecture and interiors by ID Studio Interiors, and we were proud to build it.

Fire pit season. Out back at the Fairway Project, a 17 foot double fisheye fire pit anchors terraces that look out over the golf course, and Bevolo gas lanterns come alive as the evening settles in. We rebuilt the pool, the spa and the terraces from end to end, and on a cool October night it's hard to think of a better place to be.

Forest Edge Retreat. Set on a forested hillside on Paris Mountain, this house takes its cues from mid century design: clean geometry, wide overhangs and walls of glass that frame the ridgeline. Drystack stone runs from the outside straight through to the inside, so the house and the mountain read as one continuous thing. It's one of our favorites, and a reminder of how good modern architecture feels when it's built to belong to its setting.

We take on a limited number of homes each year so that every one of them gets real attention, and every so often that means a client waits for a spot. Ashfield, all together. From the drive beneath the oaks to the last light on the pool, this is a house that rewards a slow walk through. Brick and beams, warm brass and natural stone, rich color and custom millwork in every room, and an architect, a designer and a long list of trades behind all of it. This is what we love most about our work: building homes that will still be beautiful long after we've handed over the keys.

Ashfield.

This is the one we've been waiting to show you.

The drive winds through open lawn and arching oak trees. In the evening the lamps are lit before you reach the house, the windows turn gold, and the whole front of it looks like somebody is expecting you.

We're proud of this one, and there's a great deal more of it coming this week.

Seven houses we've built.

One designed around an artist's studio. One named for the wall of glass at its front. A 1950s house taken down to its bones and rebuilt.

Put them side by side and they have almost nothing in common. A custom home is supposed to look like the family it was built for, not like the builder who built it.

What carries across all seven is the part that doesn't photograph. The same approach to sequencing, to selections, and to what happens when something on site doesn't match what's on the drawing.

If you're thinking about building or remodeling, the most useful thing you can do is talk to people who have already been through it. We keep a list of past clients and their phone numbers, and we hand it over when someone asks.
