During quarantine, Shakespeare took the opportunity to write poetry, and Isaac Newton invented physics.

What have you rediscovered during this time of quarantine? What ideas/activities have you enjoyed that you might not have otherwise?

Quarantines are nothing new: they've been used since at least the Bronze Age to prevent the spread of leprosy. In this episode (rebroadcasted from a Facebo

How to Control Moss in Your Lawn

Moss can grow pretty easily in the lawn during our wet winters here in the Portland area, especially if the area is saturated or shaded.

If you would like to get the moss in your lawn under control, here are some steps to start with:

Step 1: Promote a healthy lawn
The best thing you can do to prevent moss from spreading is to ensure there is proper:
Mowing
Soil fertility
Sunlight
Watering
Drainage

It takes some work to get those right and to be consistent at it, but you'll enjoy a thick healthy lawn as a result. I'll write more about those in another article.

Step 2: Rake out or chemically treat moss
If the existing moss in your lawn is thick, you may need to remove the bulk of it manually with a hard rake, or with a power rake (you can rent one at a tool rental store).

Otherwise, you can treat the moss with a variety of products available at your local garden center. (Be sure and thoroughly read all product labels before using them. Some products will stain concrete)

Step 3: Fertilize & overseed thin spots
Once the moss has been treated, fertilizing will help the existing turfgrass outgrow the moss, and help keep the moss under control.

If there are thin areas of lawn, overseed them with a perennial ryegrass blend. If the thin areas have much shade, use a fescue blend of seed---it will do much better in the shade. You should also consider thinning trees or plant structures if possible, to allow more light in that area so the lawn can thrive better. If the shade is heavy with minimal direct sunlight, you might consider raising the white flag, and instead of beating the moss, join it and cultivate an ornamental moss garden in that area.

Following step 1 consistently is the very best thing to do and keep doing.
