Let’s talk Lavender pruning!πŸ’œ

Lavender is one of those plants that looks tough, but it can get woody fast if it’s never shaped.

The biggest mistake is cutting too far down into the old brown wood.

That hard woody part usually does not regrow well, so I like to stay in the green growth and keep the plant rounded as I prune.

How I prune lavender:

1. Wait until the flowers have faded.

2. Trim off the spent flower stems.

3. Lightly cut back the leafy green tips, usually about 1/3 or less.

4. Look for where the soft green growth meets the woody base.

5. Stay a couple inches above that woody part when cutting.

6. Shape the plant into a gentle mound instead of leaving long skinny stems.

7. Clear out any dead pieces, but don’t cut deep into the old wood.

This keeps the plant fuller, neater, and less likely to split open in the middle.

For colder areas, I’d avoid a heavy late-fall cut. A light cleanup is fine, but the big shaping is better after flowering or when the plant is actively growing again.

Lavender likes a little discipline, but not a hard haircut. 🌿

Do you prune your lavender every year?
