Installing the load centers for this grow. 400 amp 3 phase 480 volt (left) ahead of a step-down transformer feeding a 200amp 3phase 208/120. We've spent the last two weekends installing these components in 6 buildings.

I fielded a call at a machining facility recently and found a particularly interesting situation. A receptacle outlet for a small grinder had exploded, seemingly for no apparent reason, as it wasn't being used at the time. (I know the terminology to follow may be somewhat of a foreign language to some) Looking at the plug on the left, you can see arc damage to all 4 blades. This is a 3-phase 480 volt machine, which consumes something less than 20 amps full load, at that voltage. What I discovered was that there was a direct short between each of the 3 phases, as well as each phase to ground. Pretty crazy. With no evidence of what might have caused this, the foreman of the shop had mentioned they'd been grinding carbon, which would produce a metallic, conductive dust. This is the result of not utilizing the appropriate devices/equipment for the location. An accumulation of dust in the prior devices caused this. I installed a Nema 4X (dust proof, as well as other ratings) disconnect and used the appropriate seals/gaskets for the different fittings. (Left photo) To put in perspective the severity of that short circuit, this machine that runs at about 7-8 amps full load, tripped a 250 amp main breaker causing a loss of power to an entire load center. It was pretty wicked. I'm sure the nearby employees got a good wake up call when it went boom.

Finishing up a project at an old retail space in downtown Guthrie where the insurance provider red-flagged an old 3-phase Zinsco load center, which was part of the original service to this space. We used a retro-fit bus system from Eaton that was custom made to use the existing load center enclosure. Pretty sweet. Check out the woven 3 phase bus on the old zinsco (last photo) and note the old "CT" cabinet with original OG&E CT's. We replaced the feeder conductors in that cabinet on one side of the CT's. Neat old stuff.

Predatory/fraudulent home builders= unqualified persons= brand new homes with inadequate electric services. We were called in to finish this custom home after this sweet lady was taken advantage of and found it had a nightmare of a wiring job. We're preparing to change the load center as well as the underground feeder that serves the home. Always be sure of who you're dealing with.

Another 800 amp service completed recently for growing operations. This customer wanted higher quality equipment, so they've got some nice industrial grade Siemens switch gear.

Yet another service completed for growing operations. Another 800 amps. That seems to be the magic number as of late?

It's been a very productive, albeit hectic, last couple of weeks with the November icestorm, dealing massive damage to over head electrical services. Here are just a couple we've repaired/replaced. We've also fielded several calls regarding over-voltage surges, improperly back-fed generators, to one of our customers who operates a machining facility with damaged 3 phase motor starters due to single-phasing. (3 phase motors trying to start/run on less than 3 phases) It's been interesting and still not quite over. It's a good time to think about generator transfer switches, as well as trimming those trees hanging over your over head utility service. Here's to hoping everyone has a safe and happy up-coming holiday season!
