Earlier this winter we worked together with JPW Construction LLC to redo this handicap entrance at the church, and recently we returned to plaster the exposed CMU block.

We feel blessed to be able to be part of projects like this—helping improve accessibility while also cleaning up the overall look of the space.

The fresh plaster really helped tie everything together with the new decking and railings, giving it a more finished and uniform appearance while also protecting the block underneath.

It’s always nice to come back and see a project through to the final details.

Learning Opportunity 🚧

Not all patio problems are product problems.
Sometimes they’re installation problems.

We were recently called out to correct issues on this patio that we did NOT install. The retaining wall had pulled away from the pavers, and the treads were coming loose.

The homeowner paid for a premium paver… but didn’t receive a premium installation.

Here’s what went wrong 👇

A proper retaining wall installation requires:
• At least one full buried course of block below grade
• A proper base/footing depending on wall height
• Correct backfill and compaction
• Adequate adhesive coverage on caps and glued components

You cannot set wall block directly on soil and expect it to perform.
You cannot use one small dot of glue in the center of a cap and expect it to hold long term.

Masonry is structural. It moves with freeze/thaw cycles, soil pressure, and water. If it’s not installed to industry standards from day one, it will fail.

When reviewing proposals, make sure the details are spelled out:
✔️ Excavation depth
✔️ Base material
✔️ Compaction method
✔️ Buried course
✔️ Adhesive application
✔️ Drainage

The right product matters.
The right installation matters more.
