✅To safely check your outdoor outlets this summer, visually inspect them for cracks, moisture, and charring. Test the built-in GFCI mechanisms to verify they trip and reset correctly, and ensure they feature sturdy, weather-tight covers

✅Key Inspection Steps
• Visual Check: Look for cracks, discoloration, or singe marks on the plastic faceplate.
• The "Pull" Test: Ensure the outlet is mounted securely to the siding or brick; loose outlets allow insects and moisture inside.
• Test the GFCI: Push the "Test" button—you should hear a click and power should cut off. Press "Reset" to restore power. If the button won't reset or clicks repeatedly, the outlet needs immediate replacement.
• Inspect Covers: Verify the weatherproof covers snap completely shut and do not break when closed.
Summer Operation Best Practices
• Outdoor Cords: Never use standard indoor extension cords outside. Always use heavy-duty, UL-listed cords specifically rated for outdoor use.
• Unplug When Not in Use: Store appliances and power down lights when they are not being actively monitored.
• Lithium Batteries: When done charging, unplug all batteries and chargers. Follow all manufacturer’s instructions. Never leave unattended!

☀️Tomorrow’s sudden jump into the 90s is a reminder that extreme heat can put major stress on the electrical grid. When thousands of homes suddenly crank up AC units at once, energy demand spikes and can increase the risk of brownouts during summer heat waves.

A few easy ways to help:
• Open windows in the a.m. when temps are low. Close before temps get above 75 degrees.
• Keep blinds/curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
• Use fans when possible.
• Raise the thermostat a couple degrees.
• Avoid heavy appliance use during peak afternoon hours.

✳️And remember: find where your local community’s cooling shelters are just in case!

Small actions across the community can help reduce strain on the grid while keeping everyone safer during extreme heat.

💡Is Your Light a Hidden Fire Hazard?

Thomas Edison’s May 8, 1880 patent improved lamp mounting and sealed connections (early socket/lead through design) — the precursor to lamp sockets and lighting we know today. When was the last time you checked your lighting in your home? Loose sockets, flickering lights, frayed cords, or buzzing fixtures may cause fires and shocks. Check your fixtures and stop using them if damaged, use correct wattage bulbs, secure cords, never run cords under furniture or rugs…and call a licensed electrician for wiring or persistent problems.

ℹ️May is National Electrical Safety Month.⚡️
Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) test and certify electrical equipment to meet minimum safety standards. Think of the ‘UL’ mark!

🚨Why listed and approved products matter:
• Compliant – Products are independently tested to ensure they meet established safety requirements.
• Safer – Certified equipment is evaluated to reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and other hazards.
• Validated – Certifications from organizations such as UL, CSA, and Intertek confirm third-party verification.

When purchasing electrical products, always look for certification marks. Avoid using or installing equipment without proper certification, as it may not meet safety standards. Choosing certified products is a simple step that helps protect your home, business, and those around you.
