Due to time and compliance commitments, we are going to be closing down Sustainable Landscapes, Inc. for the foreseeable future.

There are a lot of great groups doing shoreline and native plant work in the Northern Neck - our original area of interest - that can help with folks who are still looking for support.

Our retail partner Northern Neck Native Plant Co will take over for Native Plant Fridays on a limited schedule in the spring and continue offering free site evaluation for folks in the Northern Neck.

Thank you for letting us help!

On a whim, an HOA in Richmond reached out about help with a tree.

It was a Black Gum cultivar planted inside a courtyard. They had suspicions it was too big and messy of a tree for their courtyard and the concrete around it - it was. We helped them identify a new, site appropriate smaller tree/tall shrub.

By chance we were in the neighborhood this weekend and helped them with removal and disposal.

While there is a lot of discussion about shoreline protection, it’s also critically important to protect your riprap and seawalls as well.

This homeowner on the Rappahannock enlisted us to provide a list and planting plan for site suitable plants for primarily dry land area. Some parts were shady and some parts had blazing hot sun.

Between the slope of the yard and the porch they sit on, this bottom area could easily host low growing grasses like Purple Love Grass and Pink Muhly. The area to the left is shaded by a large tree and needed some privacy so varying shade tolerant shrubs were planted with sun loving ones closer to the shore.

Simple planting plans like this can be done easily by a homeowner or hired out by local landscapers who provide native plants and grasses. In this instance, Northern Neck Native Plant Co sourced the plants and installed them but there are lots of great gardening and landscape companies in the Northern Neck to choose from! Contact your local Soil & Water Conservation District for a full list or reach out if you need help.

Are you a church, school, community group, municipality, or HOA in need of a larger shade tree planted, but don’t have the funds?

Maybe you’ve got a big yard at your house or farm that could use a tree but you don’t want to wait for a little stick to grow?

We have (5) 10-gallon, 1” caliper pin oaks available for free.

We are even offering free planting.

DM us if you’d like one dropped off or planted!

Pretty soon we’ll start seeing the Bradford Pear do its usual early spring bloom. You’ll find this plant for sale under the name Bradford Pear, or other names like Cleveland Select, Chanticleer, or Callery Pear.

This is an invasive species from Asia whose fruit/seeds can make birds sick. The tree is spread by fruit/seeds and can rapidly take over an area crowding out beneficial native trees and shrubs.

We recommend cutting down these trees wherever possible and replacing them. They’re especially problematic in residential areas because they are prone to limb breakage.

Just in time for our soon to be announced Hedgerow Project!

Planting hedgerows increases soil carbon storage by almost half compared to nearby grassland—no matter where they are in the country—says new research.

We are super excited to have done our first shoreline assessment on Urbanna Creek!

The homeowner has been renaturalizing her low and high marsh area allowing Smooth Cordgrass and Salt Meadow Hay to fill in and letting Swamp Rose Mallow expand.

Using a Google Earth snapshot and a site visit we drew up a list of plants and planting plan/timeline. More salt tolerant perennials like Seaside Goldenrod, Swamp Rose Mallow, and Coastal Plain Joe Pye W**d will be added.

The hot, full sun conditions of the lawn will make a great showing for purple Lovegrass, pink Muhly, Pasture Rose, and Wax Myrtle, among others.

The homeowner has found a native plant seller/installer to flesh out her vision with plans to get started soon!
