Most people imagine a tree’s roots growing straight down into the ground. That picture is one of the reasons healthy trees can be damaged without anyone realizing it.

For many landscape trees, much of the active root system grows outward and remains surprisingly close to the surface, often within the top 6 to 18 inches of soil. These shallow roots absorb water, nutrients, and oxygen while helping support the tree above them.

That means an area that looks like ordinary lawn may actually be an essential part of the tree’s structure.

Digging a trench, installing a patio, changing the grade, parking heavy equipment, or repeatedly driving across the soil can cut roots or compact the ground around them. Compacted soil contains less space for air and water, making it harder for the roots to function normally.

The difficult part is that root damage does not always become visible immediately.

A tree may continue looking healthy for months or even years before the canopy begins to thin, branches start dying back, leaves become smaller, or the tree struggles during heat, drought, heavy rain, or strong winds. By the time the symptoms appear above ground, the original damage may already be difficult to reverse.

A few ways to protect the root system include:

• Keeping vehicles and heavy equipment away from the area beneath the canopy
• Avoiding trenches or deep digging near mature trees
• Planning patios, driveways, and construction with the root zone in mind
• Not piling excessive soil or mulch around the trunk
• Watching for changes in the canopy after nearby construction or landscaping

The tree does not end where the trunk meets the ground. Some of its most important structures may be only inches below your feet.

Before starting a project near a mature tree, take a moment to consider what you cannot see. Protecting the roots today may protect the entire tree for years to come.

Most trees don’t fall because the wind was “too strong.” The wind is often just the final test of damage that has been developing quietly for months or even years.

A tree can look green, full, and stable while the inside of its trunk is hollow, decaying, or structurally compromised. Bark can hide cavities. Leaves may continue growing even when part of the root system is failing. Insects and fungi can also weaken the wood long before the damage becomes obvious from the ground.

During a storm, rain saturates the soil and reduces the roots’ ability to hold the tree firmly. Wind adds repeated pressure to the trunk and canopy. If the tree is leaning, split at a main union, top-heavy, or weakened by decay, that extra force may be enough to uproot it or break a major limb.

But a tree does not need a major storm to fail.

A calm day can be the moment when internal decay, root damage, drought stress, old wounds, or years of uneven weight finally reach a breaking point. A branch that falls today may have been damaged weeks ago. Roots may have been cut during construction, while carpenter ants, borers, or fungal decay may be affecting wood that still looks normal from the outside.

Warning signs may include:

• Mushrooms near the trunk or roots
• Cracks, cavities, or loose bark
• Dead limbs mixed into a green canopy
• Sudden leaning or lifted soil around the base
• Sawdust-like material or insect activity
• Weak V-shaped branch unions
• Limbs hanging over a house, driveway, or power line

What looks sudden in this video usually is not sudden at all. The fall happens in seconds, but the damage may have been developing for years. A storm, strong gust, or the tree’s own weight may be the final force a weakened structure can no longer support.

That is why appearance alone cannot determine whether a tree is safe. A professional assessment can identify hidden decay, unstable roots, weak branch unions, and compromised limbs before they become an emergency.

If a tree on your property looks different, sounds hollow, has started leaning, or simply does not feel right, it may be worth having it checked. A closer look today could prevent a bigger problem tomorrow.

Some of the most dangerous trees in a yard are the ones that still look alive.

You might know the story behind "Miracles from Heaven." It's based on a real family in Texas whose young daughter fell nearly 30 feet inside a cottonwood tree in their own yard. From the outside, that tree looked completely healthy. Full trunk, standing tall, nothing obviously wrong. Inside, it was hollow and rotting, and nobody had the slightest idea until a child was already trapped in the dark at the bottom of it.

It makes for a powerful movie moment. The unsettling part is how ordinary that setup actually is.

Trees fail like this in real neighborhoods more often than people think. In an average year, falling trees and limbs kill about 30 people in the U.S., and in 2025 that number hit 34, more than lightning killed that year. Hundreds more are injured, and some of the victims every year are young children. There's even a well-known case of a park tree that had been inspected and cleared as healthy, and it still came down on kids playing below. Witnesses heard a crack seconds before it fell. No dead branches waving a warning. Just a trunk quietly losing strength from the inside out.

That's the whole problem with decay. A tree can hold a full green canopy while the wood underneath turns soft. The part you can see stays convincing right up until the part you can't see gives out.

So before you trust the tree standing over your roof, your kids' swing set, or your driveway, look for these:
• Mushrooms or shelf fungi growing at the base or along the trunk
• Cracks, splits, or cavities in the main stem
• A hollow sound when you knock on the trunk
• Large sections of bark peeling or falling away
• Dead limbs at the top while the rest still looks green
• A new or worsening lean, or soil lifting near the roots

Here's the honest part: none of these tell you how far the decay has spread. You can't read the inside of a trunk from the outside, and neither can we from a photo. That's why the right move is to have a certified arborist check the structure itself.

If a tree near your home fits any of this, send us a message. We'd rather take a look now than read about it later.

Most people think tree companies remove trees.

The truth is...

We spend a lot more time trying to keep them standing.

Trees cool our streets.
They make neighborhoods quieter.
They provide shade during hot Massachusetts summers.
They improve air quality.
They become part of family memories, backyards, and communities.

That's why every decision we make starts with the same question:

"Can this tree be preserved?"

At Hansen Tree, our mission has never been to remove more trees.

It's to protect the trees that make the South Shore feel like home.

And when removal becomes necessary, it's because a tree is dead, unsafe, damaged, or creating a real risk to people or property.

Because responsible tree care isn't about taking trees down.

It's about knowing which ones should stay.

South Shore deserves more of this. 🌳💚

You’d be surprised how many trees look perfectly healthy from the outside.

Green leaves. Full canopy. No obvious signs of trouble.

And then the tree comes down…

Only to reveal that most of the trunk was already gone on the inside.

Decay doesn’t always announce itself.

Sometimes the warning signs are hidden where most homeowners never think to look.

That’s why tree inspections aren’t just about what you can see from the driveway.

Sometimes the biggest problems are the ones hiding in plain sight.

The hottest part of your yard is often the part without trees.

A healthy, well-placed tree can make outdoor spaces feel cooler, more comfortable and more enjoyable during the summer.

Sometimes tree care is not just about looks. It is about creating shade, protecting your outdoor space and making your property work better for everyday life.

That is one of the reasons trees matter more than most people think.
