🌨️ Why Winterize Your Sprinkler System?

Minnesota winters are tough — and your sprinkler system feels it, too. If water is left inside the pipes when the ground freezes, it can cause:

🚰 Burst pipes underground – water expands as it freezes, cracking pipes you can’t even see.

💧 Broken sprinkler heads – frozen water pops them apart.

⚡ Damaged valves & backflow preventers – repairs can cost hundreds of dollars.

💸 Expensive spring repairs – digging up your yard to fix leaks isn’t fun (or cheap).

✅ Winterization = protection.
By blowing out the system with air, we safely remove leftover water so nothing can freeze and break. It’s quick, affordable, and gives you peace of mind all winter long.

📅 Schedule now before the first freeze to save your system (and your wallet) from a costly spring surprise. https://www.timolsonlawncare.com/

Average date for first 32°F (freeze) in fall

When do we see freezing temps?

From the NOAA/NCEI summary for the U of MN–St. Paul (1991–2020 climate normals):

The median (50 %) probability of the first fall freeze (≤ 32 °F) occurs on October 8.

The 70 % probability threshold corresponds to October 5.

The 30 % probability threshold corresponds to October 2.

This implies your lawn or sprinkler system typically encounters its first freezing temperatures around early October.

If water isn’t removed before freezing, the system will almost certainly suffer cracks, bursts, and expensive damage. Winterizing is like putting a “winter coat” on your irrigation system.

The cold weather always sneaks up on us Minnesotans! The average date of the first frost in Minnesota ranges from August 21 to October 20, depending on the location. Twin Cities: Between October 1 and 10

A frost occurs when the air temperature is between 32°F and 36°F, while a freeze occurs when the air temperature drops below 32°F. A hard freeze occurs when the air temperature drops below 28°F and stays there for at least four hours. Each year we see people who wait too long and end up with an emergency winterization situation. This is costly and extremely preventable! Make sure your sprinkler system is ready!
