Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller, Homeland Security Director Dawson Primes, Sheriff Gerald Sticker, and the state's Unified Command are addressing the media this morning in Amite. Among the topics discussed in this briefing:
Evacuation order remains in effect for the area within a one-mile radius of Smitty's in Roseland. Parish President Robby Miller said all efforts are being made to protect people, property, and the environment.
Officials encourage residents to limit exposure to soot/residue. Officials urge residents to wash hands frequently, and do not put your hands near your face if you are exposed to this residue.
Three different agencies are testing air quality. Parish President Robby Miller said Smitty's has provided an "astronomical" response. He praised their immediate response and shared that many of these services which have been staged at the site would typically take more than 24 hours to arrive on scene. He said this has been an extraordinary effort, and praised all those working to protect life, property, and environment.
Officials said there have been no reports of serious injuries or loss of life.
Fire scene is still active, officials said.
42 Roseland residents are housed in an evacuation shelter in Amite. Arrangements are being made to house/accommodate these residents through at least tonight.
Officials are aware of residue in Tangipahoa River. That is being investigated today and mitigation plans are in place.
Officials urged residents who have other health concerns to contact the Poison Control hotline at 1-800-222-1222. That is a free call, operating 24/7, and it puts you in contact with experts who can help.
This remains a very active situation. Please stay tuned to Tangipahoa Parish Government, Louisiana State Police, and trusted news sources for updates.
