Sometimes helping the environment can be really simple.

Megan, our Chief Estimator, recently took part in Clean the Bay day at Fort Monroe. It was a volunteer event focused on helping keep the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas clean and safe, for both the community and the wildlife that call it home.

Alongside her mom and sister, Megan volunteered at the Challenge Site, where they spent the morning bagging litter and debris.

Megan described it as a rewarding experience, with beautiful weather, scenic views, and a chance to see some of the local wildlife they were helping to protect.

The event was a great reminder of the positive impact volunteers can make on preserving our local shoreline. 💚

I know, I know - we speak about safety a lot here, but we’re not sorry because it is THE most important thing!

It’s what keeps our team safe, our projects moving, and the business running year after year.

Organized by the National Safety Council (NSC) June is , celebrating its 30th anniversary at trying to reduce injuries and fatalities. That’s why we continually invest in Health and Safety training, check our PPE, and the equipment we work with day in, day out to prevent accidents from happening.

An evening where art meets purpose 🎨

That was the theme for the Arts For All Ball hosted at Christopher Newport University a few months ago, which was a cruise-themed celebration of the Arts.

Captivating exhibitions, live music from The Commodores , delicious food, dancing and immersive experiences meant that our CEO Marsha and President Pam had a fantastic evening.

Hudgins was proud to be a sponsor with the money raised going to fund scholarships for aspiring artists, provide accessible experiences for people with disabilities, and deliver performances to neighborhoods in need. It’s always a pleasure to invest in our community and celebrate the Arts. 🤍

Hearing this story feels like a reunion between old friends.

and are all home to projects we’ve previously worked on, and now these organizations are analyzing just how important green spaces are for the public.

In particular, researchers at ODU want to see how parks and trails impact local wildlife, flooding and residents’ wellbeing in Hampton Roads, and why they’re worth investing in.

For example, studies prove that nature boosts people’s health, with Back Bay in Virginia Beach having an annual recreational value of around $75 million (surveys from sites like Flickr, All Trails and TripAdvisor). These natural spaces also absorb rainwater, so are integral to protecting the surrounding land.

Laura Costadone, an assistant professor at ODU’s Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience, is leading the research. Costadone said she hopes “the growing body of evidence will empower local governments to prioritize projects rooted in nature, especially compared to hardened flood infrastructure that doesn’t provide secondary benefits for the ecosystem or recreation.”

Party hats on people: today is our CEO Marsha Hudgins’ birthday! 🥳

As the person that works most closely with her, we asked President Pam Kelly to share a few words:

“If you've spent any time around Marsha, you'll know that standing still isn't in her nature. She’s tenacious, driven and determined, qualities that have shaped Hudgins into the successful company it is today. She's never accepted "that's how we've always done it" as an answer, and instead looks for new ways to grow, improve, and create opportunities for both the business and the people within it.

She leads with purpose and heart. Marsha champions employee wellbeing, encourages the advancement of women in business, and regularly supports non-profit organizations and local community events. One of Marsha's favourite sayings is that "people underestimating her is her superpower" and anyone who knows her knows just how true that is.”
