What's the Best Thermostat Setting to Save Money This Summer? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!
As summer arrives, we hear this question from homeowners across Hampton Roads and the Peninsula.
Today's Question:
"What's the best thermostat setting to save money during the summer?"
Lee's Answer:
There isn't one perfect temperature for everyone.
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 78° for efficiency, but many homeowners find that uncomfortable—especially during our humid Virginia summers.
The reality is that comfort varies from person to person. Humidity, activity level, age, medications, hormonal changes, and personal preference all play a role.
For many families, comfort falls somewhere between 72° and 76°.
A few things to keep in mind:
✅ Higher thermostat settings generally use less energy
✅ Lower temperatures mean longer run times and higher utility bills
✅ Humidity affects comfort as much as temperature
✅ Ceiling fans can help rooms feel cooler
✅ Consistent settings are usually more efficient than constant adjustments
The best setting isn't necessarily the lowest.
It's the one that keeps your family comfortable while fitting your budget.
