Lots of things can cause dirty looking water. If you've noticed the local fire department flushing hydrants near you, dirty looking water is a very common issue. It's typically caused by scale (mineral buildup) breaking apart in the main line. This scale is not good for plumbing valves (especially tubs and toilets) and faucet aerators. The minerals (mainly calcium) in scale are not considered harmful to us, BUT who wants to drink or bathe in this dirty looking liquid? This plumber's recommendation is to turn on a hose bib for a while or run the cold water in a tub for a bit until your water is clear again. If you have to run a faucet to get rid of the dirty water, remove the aerator so that it doesn't get clogged.
