Well, technology has decided to test my patience tonight. 😂 I’ve been fighting with audio issues for what feels like forever, and apparently my videos have decided they don’t want to cooperate!

I’ve tried just about everything I can think of, but sometimes technology wins. 🤦‍♀️

I’m hoping to get everything sorted out soon, but if you don’t see a new reel tonight, that’s why! I’ll be back next week with more plant facts, tips, and all things leafy. 🌱💚

Thanks for sticking around and supporting my little plant business!

Why are there water droplets on your plant’s leaf tips? 💧

It could be guttation, a process where root pressure helps push liquid water out through specialized structures called hydathodes.

It’s often noticeable overnight or early in the morning when transpiration is low and the growing medium is moist.

It’s not the same as dew, and it doesn’t automatically mean you’re overwatering, it’s often a sign that your plants are well hydrated!

Long vines and tiny leaves? Your plant might be telling you something! 🌿

☀️ Insufficient light: When a plant isn’t receiving enough light, it may stretch out with longer spaces between leaves in an attempt to reach better lighting. New leaves may also be smaller than normal.

🪴 Poor soil health or insufficient nutrients: Plants need healthy roots, adequate nutrients, and the right growing conditions to support new growth. Depleted growing media, nutrient deficiencies, or unhealthy roots can all contribute to smaller leaves.

Keep in mind that long vines and small leaves can also be normal for some species or happen when a plant is still immature. Look at your plant’s normal growth pattern before making changes!

Check your lighting, inspect your roots if needed, and make sure your plant is getting the care it needs. 🌱

Why do some variegated plants revert to green? 🌱 Let’s talk about chimeras and variegation stability!

A chimera is a plant containing two or more genetically distinct populations of cells. In some variegated plants, certain cells can produce chlorophyll (the pigment responsible for green color), while others cannot. The way these cells are organized in the growing point influences the variegation pattern and how stable it is.

There are three main types of plant chimeras:

🌿 Periclinal chimeras: Different genetic cell populations occupy entire layers of the growing point. This arrangement is generally the most stable type of chimera.

🌿 Mericlinal chimeras: A genetic change affects only part of a cell layer. This arrangement is less stable and can be lost as the plant grows.

🌿 Sectorial chimeras: Different genetic cell populations occupy sections that extend through multiple cell layers. These are also generally unstable and can produce dramatically different patterns in new growth.

So, what does this mean for our houseplants?

Monstera deliciosa ‘Albo’ is a familiar example of variegation that can be unstable. Its white and green pattern can change, and growth can become entirely green or excessively white.

Monstera deliciosa ‘Thai Constellation’ is generally considered more stable because its variegation behaves differently and is commonly propagated through tissue culture. However, stable doesn’t mean that a plant can never produce unusual growth or mutations!

And my own variegated String of Pearls and Monstera adansonii tricolor? Both have become mostly green over time. These are great reminders that variegation isn’t always permanent.

One important distinction: not all variegation is caused by chimeras, and the precise cellular mechanism behind every popular variegated cultivar isn’t fully established.

Do you have a variegated plant that’s reverted? Tell me which one in the comments! 👇

🌱 5 reasons you’re killing your string of pearls!

String of pearls can be a little tricky to keep happy, but getting these five things right can make a HUGE difference! ☀️

🌞 Direct sunlight is essential for healthy, full growth. Without enough light, your plant can become stretched, sparse, and eventually decline.

💧 Don’t overwater! Start with watering about every two weeks, but always check that the soil has completely dried out first.

🪴 Use a well-draining succulent mix to prevent soggy soil and root rot.

🪴 Avoid oversized pots! Too much soil around a small root system can stay wet for too long.

🌿 And when shopping for string of pearls, don’t overlook root health! In my experience, a larger, well-established plant is often a better investment than a tiny cutting with little to no roots.

Save this so your String of Pearls doesn’t turn into a String of Problems and follow along for more plant care tips! 🌱

🌱 WHY DO SOME HAWORTHIAS HAVE WINDOWS?! 👀

One of the coolest succulent adaptations is hiding in plain sight!

Some Haworthias have translucent areas on the tips of their leaves called leaf windows. These aren’t just decorative features, they serve a purpose! 🤯

🌞 They help light reach deeper into the leaf. The translucent tissue allows sunlight to pe*****te farther into the plant, helping photosynthesis take place even when much of the leaf is beneath the soil surface.

🪨 They work with the plant’s growing habits. Some Haworthias naturally grow partially buried in rocky or sandy environments, leaving only their leaf tips exposed to the light.

☀️ They help the plant survive harsh conditions. Keeping much of the plant beneath the soil can help reduce direct exposure to intense sunlight and limit water loss in its natural environment.

And here’s the fun part: NOT ALL HAWORTHIAS HAVE WINDOWS! 👀 Some species have beautifully translucent leaf tips, while others have solid, opaque leaves.

Nature really said, “What if we put a skylight in a succulent?” 😂🌵

💬 Have you noticed the windows on your Haworthias before, or is this your first time learning about them?

🌵STOP TOUCHING YOUR ECHEVERIA’S POWDERY LEAVES! 👀

That beautiful, frosty coating on your Echeveria isn’t dust, dirt, or something that needs to be cleaned off. It’s called farina, a natural, waxy coating that helps protect the plant! 💚

☀️ Sun protection: Farina helps reflect excess sunlight and UV radiation, reducing the amount of intense light reaching the leaf surface. Think of it as your succulent’s own little layer of sunscreen!

💧 Moisture protection: This waxy coating helps repel water from the leaves, reducing how long moisture sits on the surface. It can also help limit water loss from the leaves, especially in hot, dry conditions.

🖐️ Why you shouldn’t touch it: Farina is easily rubbed off, and once it’s gone, your plant can’t simply put that exact coating back in the same spot overnight. It may gradually produce new farina as the leaves grow, but the marks on existing leaves can remain permanently. Fingerprints, smudges, and shiny patches are often the result!

📦 What about a little powder loss? Don’t panic! Some rubbing or small patches of missing farina are completely normal, especially when plants are transported. My plants travel back and forth to different events, so occasional contact during handling is sometimes unavoidable. The same thing can happen when a farina-coated succulent is shipped to your door.

A little powder loss here and there doesn’t automatically mean your plant is unhealthy. However, excessive rubbing can leave leaves more exposed to intense sunlight and can affect their beautiful, frosty appearance.

🌱 My tip: Handle Echeverias by their pot whenever possible, avoid rubbing the leaves, and give them time to adjust to new lighting conditions after transport.

That powdery coating is part of what makes these succulents so gorgeous, so let’s keep our hands off the farina! 😂💚

👇 Did you know that Echeverias make their own natural sunscreen?
