Now that we’ve settled in at home as a family, I’ve been able to spend more time in the shop and reflect on where this journey started—and where it's going. When I first picked up woodworking, it was just a hobby—something I did to unwind and create. I never expected such a positive response from friends, family, and eventually people I’d never met.
What began as a few small orders to fund my tools quickly turned into something more. Then one day, a close friend surprised me with the gift of a CNC. With my background in graphic design and AutoCAD, things really took off. Soon, fire departments and police departments began reaching out, and that’s when Erdman Woodworks became something real.
In the beginning, I gave away a lot of my work or offered heavy discounts to get my name out there. Time and time again, people told me I was undervaluing myself—and they were right. Over the past month, during baby leave, I’ve had the chance to spend time both in the shop and with my growing family. That time made me realize something important: my time is more valuable than ever.
If I want this business to grow without burning out, I need to make some changes. So I’ve created a new pricing model that better reflects the time, care, and craftsmanship that go into each plaque. I’ve also introduced Baltic birch as a cost-effective alternative to hardwood—helping keep turnaround times short and prices accessible without compromising quality.
As Erdman Woodworks grows, I’ve found my true niche in CNC work. Moving forward, I’ll be focusing primarily on plaques, badges, and flags. While I’ve loved offering a wide range of custom woodworking, narrowing my focus will help me create more meaningful, detailed, and timely work.
Thank you all for the unwavering support over the years. I’m incredibly excited about this next chapter and grateful to have you along for the ride.
