We needed that! It’s been months without measurable rain across much of the state and the trees were feeling it! Support your local nurseries for your fall tree planting projects and remember, if you want a long-lived, resilient tree, purchase smaller, native trees for your landscape. Smaller trees establish more quickly and grow faster. Native trees can better withstand Oklahoma’s extremes and offer additional ecological benefits. For a list of native trees in your area, please seehttps://ag.ok.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Oklahoma-Native-Species-by-County-Sheet1.pdf
Happy planting!

🌔 Lights Out for Fall Migration - Now through the end of October, we ask that you turn off non-essential outdoor lights between 11 PM – 6 AM to protect migrating birds and vital pollinators. 🦆🦋

💡 Artificial light at night disrupts natural behaviors, reduces pollination, and can draw wildlife into unsafe areas—impacting birds, moths, monarchs, and more.

Simple actions make a big difference:
• Close blinds at night
• Don't use landscape lighting
• Use warm, down-directed, motion-activated lights when needed

🔭 Together, we can reduce light pollution, save energy, protect wildlife, and bring back the stars.

A little unexpected wildlife encounter while mowing this morning 🐝🌸

Found these two bumblebees hard at work on a Texas thistle. Even in the middle of mowing season, there’s always something interesting to find when you slow down and look around.

It's hot! We Oklahoman's are no strangers to heat and dry spells, but did you know the effects of a severe drought on your trees can last for years? It's not just about immediate wilting.

Long-Term Effects of Drought on Trees:
A major drought can weaken a tree's entire system, making it vulnerable for 2–7 years afterward (the "Drought Legacy Effect").

🛑 Hydraulic Failure: Air bubbles (embolisms) block water transport in the sapwood, permanently damaging the tree's plumbing.

🛑 Feeder Root Dieback: Essential roots that absorb water and nutrients die off quickly in dry soil.

🛑 Vulnerability to Pests & Disease: Stressed trees have depleted energy reserves and cannot defend themselves against boring insects like bark beetles or fungal diseases.

How You Can Help Your Trees Remain Resilient:
Action taken during and before a drought makes all the difference for long-term health.

✅ Proper Mulching: Maintain a 3-4 inch layer of undyed, organic mulch around the root zone (but not touching the trunk). This retains soil moisture and insulates roots.

✅ Supplemental, Deep Watering: During dry periods, water slowly and deeply around the drip line of your trees to reach critical root zones, rather than frequent shallow watering.

✅ Species Selection: Consider planting drought-tolerant species native to Oklahoma, like Caddo Maple, Oklahoma Redbud, and various resilient Oaks. They are adapted to our unique climate challenges.

Let's protect our community canopy together. 🌳

Excellent information

Your trees are feeling the heat too 🌳☀️

High temperatures and limited rainfall can put stress on trees, especially young or recently planted ones.

During hot, dry conditions, pay attention to your tree and the moisture in the soil before reaching for the hose. Both too little and too much water can stress a tree and overwatering can contribute to tree decline.

When watering is needed, water slowly and deeply around the root zone rather than directly at the trunk. A layer of mulch can also help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Watch for signs of stress, including wilting, leaf scorch, early leaf drop or canopy dieback.

As summer wears on, the days quietly begin to get shorter. The mornings come a little later, the evenings arrive a little sooner, and before we realize it, the long days of summer will be behind us.

There’s something about mowing that makes you notice the seasons changing. In the spring, everything is waking up. Summer brings long days, fast growth, heat, and what sometimes feels like an endless list of yards to mow. Then, almost without warning, the grass begins to slow down, the leaves start changing, and the season starts winding down.

It’s a good reminder that nothing stays the same forever.

We spend so much time trying to keep things looking the same, keeping the grass cut, the beds cleaned up, and the property looking its best. But nature has its own schedule. The grass grows, we cut it. The seasons change, and we adjust.

There are only so many summer evenings left. So enjoy the work, enjoy the sunshine, take a little extra time to appreciate the property you’re standing on, and don’t be afraid to notice how quickly it’s all passing by.

Before long, the mowers will be parked, the days will be short, and we’ll be wishing for these long summer evenings again.

For now, there’s still grass to cut. 🌱

Following the severe storms that swept across Oklahoma over the weekend, our hearts go out to everyone dealing with widespread property and tree damage.

As we shift focus toward clean-up, it is critical to prioritize safety when handling damaged, split, or uprooted trees. Here are three essential resources to help our residents and community leaders safely navigate storm recovery:

1. Report Your Property and Tree Damage:
State and local emergency managers use public reports to assess the full scale of the impact and coordinate community resources. Please take a moment to report your storm damage online at:

2. Find a Certified Arborist (For Homeowners):
For dangerous removals, heavy limb hanging, or assessing whether a damaged tree can be saved, be cautious when hiring unverified door-to-door crews. Protect your property and find an ISA Certified Arborist near you by using the official directory at:

3. Resources for Community Leaders & City Officials:
If you are a municipal leader, public works director, or community official managing community-wide tree hazards, urban canopy restoration, and storm mitigation planning, access specialized training and guidance at:

🚨 Urgent Safety Reminder: Always assume any downed utility line is energized and dangerous. Keep your distance, keep children and pets clear, and immediately contact your local utility company to report downed lines before starting any tree cleanup.

Stay safe, Oklahoma. We will get through this recovery together.

Tuesday morning, we completed two property cleanup projects for a new customer in the Town of Luther. Both properties had become significantly overgrown and required far more than routine lawn maintenance.

One of the properties had vegetation that had grown into and was beginning to overtake a portion of the roadway. The overgrowth had to be cleared back to satisfy code enforcement requirements and abate the nuisance. Restoring safe access and visibility required extensive brush removal, trimming, and the use of heavy equipment.

The second property had become so overgrown that traditional mowing equipment simply wasn’t enough to get the job done efficiently. For that project, we collaborated with Spears Landscape & Lawncare to reclaim the property and bring it back under control. Through teamwork and the right equipment, we were able to transform the property and make it manageable again.

Many people don’t realize that overgrown property reclamation is very different from routine lawn mowing. When properties are neglected for extended periods of time, additional labor, specialized equipment, debris removal, and longer operating hours are often required. Because of this, cleanup and reclamation projects are typically more expensive than traditional lawn maintenance services.

Whether you’re dealing with an overgrown lot, code enforcement concerns, inherited property, rental property cleanup, or simply a yard that has gotten away from you, Brett’s Lawn Services LLC has the equipment and experience to help. From routine mowing to large-scale property cleanups, we’re ready to tackle projects of all sizes.
