I was talking to a site foreman yesterday and he told me he cannot find enough brickies or sparks for love nor money. It is absolute madness. For thirty years, we have told every kid that they must go to university to be successful. Now, we have thousands of graduates with fifty grand of debt and degrees they cannot use, while our essential trades are dying out. You cannot fix a burst pipe with a sociology essay. Common sense tells us that a skilled trade is a far better investment for our youth than years of lectures and a mountain of debt.

The traditional view held by many parents is that university is a status symbol. They feel like they have failed if their child does not get a degree. But the modern reality is that a skilled electrician or plumber can earn twice as much as a middle manager, and they start their adult lives without a penny of debt. It is time we stopped looking down on manual labor and started respecting the trades that actually build and maintain our world. We should be encouraging our lads and lasses to pick up tools and take pride in being a master of a craft. It builds character and a proper work ethic.
