You know what LOVE dahlias? Grasshoppers and Japanese beetles. 🪲 They devour the petals! In order to guarantee quality blooms, we net each individual flower. Totally worth it. And if you’re wondering, we do hand pick off the beetles and kill them in soapy water. It’s just the most effective way to handle the invasive pest.

What goes into your hand-tied bouquets?

After growing and watering and weeding, we plan cutting. That happens multiple times a week when we check blooms to determine when it’s just right to cut. Snapdragons go early and will continue to open after snipping, but if you cut zinnias before they’re completely open, the stems get floppy (and if you keep the leaves on, that makes it even worse).

Which leads to the next step: cleaning the leaves. Leaves in the water make for slimy and poor conditions. Clean them up, and they last in a chilled environment for quite a few days! And we wrap strategically so the buds don’t dry.

The fun part is making pretty color combos, and tying and wrapping them. And the most rewarding part is displaying them and knowing they’ll look beautiful in someone’s home!!
